Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

Fully insured through Allianz Insurance to the sum of $20,000,000 for Public Liability, $250,000 for Client Goods in Control and a further $50,000 for Consumer Protection Liability (2x legislated requirement).  I offer a 5 year warranty on my labour and a minimum of 2 years on all products supplied (average is 5 years on product).

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I like working with my hands, travelling from site to site and solving the more peculiar technical challenges when they arise.   I also think it's good to stay abreast of the whole trade, rather than focus on just one specific subset or client base.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Recently I was engaged to design and fabricate a new adaptor (for connecting a boat to a marina 63A outlet). The previous adaptor had let water in during a cyclone so the replacement exceeded IP68K requirements. As long as the boat doesn't get blown away the new one will outlast a cyclone easily.

Being able to run through a completed installation or repair with the customer, knowing that it will work as intended, be fit for purpose and reliable for years to come.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

What sort of work do you normally do, are you a licenced and insured contractor (ask to see the card if not the online verification) and if there are any grey areas or missing detail in a quote ask for clarification (variables are expensive).

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

I have been asked to install equipment supplied by customers (or repair lights etc. well beyond their expected lifespan).   As a general rule I won't install equipment I can't guarantee will be fit for purpose and safe nor will I waste time and your money repairing equipment that needs replacing.

I'm looking to build a quality customer base to supplement larger tenders for the government and non-profit sector so will be able to demonstrate punctuality for all appointments, detailed and accurate quotes and quality, efficient work at a time that suits you.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Accepted Answer

I will not ever take a short-cut on product or installation practice to save time or money. I would rather pass on work than make a loss but would also prefer to make a loss than do unsafe or substandard work.  I'll only use reputable brands with suitable warranties (e.g. Clipsal, TESLA, Legrand)

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

For electrical, brand and model of equipment (plus quantities), whether it's replacing existing or new circuits need to be run and when you'd like the work to be completed (after hours and weekends is available and encouraged).  For everything else (and we have a broad range of services), the more detail the better. Photos, plans, sketches or a long wandering conversation all helps me understand what you want/need and how I can best help.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Pick out the brand, model, species etc. so I can get more quotes from suppliers  2. Make sure access to the areas I'll be working is straightforward.  3. Think about whether you'd like me to clean up (vacuum, rubbish), happy to do so but an option to save.

What makes your pricing competitive?

No way to say this without sounding conceited but I'm pricing a better than average service (on response times, technical knowledge and overall quality).  When comparing, keep in mind that $10/hr less won't be a saving if they take 10 minutes longer to fix the problem.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

Variable depending on type of work, when it's performed and whether it's scheduled or an emergency callout but as a general guide $100/hr plus GST for electrical labour and a 10% markup on the actual trade price for any parts or equipment (not 10% on RRP).  All other services vary according to sector, happy to explain rates and pricing structure but all follows the logic of the above/below.  I make my living off my labour so have no concern about installing supplied new equipment (but cannot offer a warranty on client supplied parts).

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I don't specialise, having worked across most aspects of the electrical trade I can confidently say no scope or work is beyond my ability or experience.  There is a lot of synergy with landscaping and electrical works and is something I genuinely enjoy doing as a bonus.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

10 years of trade experience in electrical and data/telecommunications work with a open/unrestricted QLD electrical contractor's licence combined with 6 years experience in civil works, landscaping, drainage and machine operation.
