Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Insurance is an absolute necessity - covering my liability and business insurances is part of what clients are paying for their photography. All our work is done on a contract basis, placing an enforceable legal obligation on me and my team to complete the work we undertake at a professional level - we don't just promise, we put it in writing and we stand by our agreement.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Years ago, a friend asked me to photograph his daughter's wedding - I had such a great time, and so many people loved the results, that when the opportunity came to move into full time photography, I took the chance in both hands, gave up my career in health care, and haven't regretted it for a moment.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

For most couples, the wedding day is about them - and so it should be: but for Jane and Stephen, it was something more. They had planned a dream wedding - a location wedding in the islands. The venue was booked, the airfares paid, the photographer, minister and reception and catering all booked paid for. Among the guests of honour was the bride's grandfather: her beloved "pop" - and 9 months before the Big  Day, Pop was diagnosed with a terminal illness; he would not be around for the wedding. I don't know what you would have done - I don't know what I would heve done... but you can guess what Jane and Stephen did, don't you? Short of money and with little time to plan or organise, they married as close to Pop's home as they could. They made their wedding about something more than just themselves. I always knew weddings were an expression of Love... but no-one ever brought the message of Love home to me quite like they did!

What do you like most about your job?

The happiest, warmest and most delightful day in a couple's life - well, one of them, anyway: who wouldn't want to share in that? What a gift to be a wedding photographer!

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Accepted Answer

Is this your full-time occupation, or do you have another job? Part-timers may be talented, but the demands of a "real" job means they cannot commit the time to proerly post-process you images, cannot get access to professional services (which means they can't obtain wholesale rates, professional discounts or access to "closed" products that are only made available to bona fide professionals.) You finish up paying retail+profit margin for goods you could have bought direct.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Q. I don't want any prints or albums; why can't I just get my photos on CD? A. It takes about 3 hours of editing for every hour we shoot to produce professional level images that you can use. If we supplied a disk-only service we would have to charge for those hours, or alternatively, do only the most basic editing. The first would make us too expensive for what you would receive; the second would give you sub-standard photos. On the other hand, by supplying prints and other products, we can generate enough income to cover our hours, ensure that you get really high quality results (which also protects our reputation).

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

We have never failed to turn up, on time and to perform. Never. Unlike many photographers, our contract includes a clause obliging us to find an alternative professional photographer if we cannot meet our commitments (we have never had to do that, but it is there in writing).

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Accepted Answer

There are quite a few good photographers about and lots more "fauxtographers"; I am the only Licentiate of the National Photographic Society anywhere in the Macarthur area. I don't expect you to fit my style  -  if you have something specific in mind, I will adapt my photography to whatever style is right for you... but really, the best reason to go with me, is that we get on well together, understand and trust each other... the technical and artistic work will follow.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Knowing what a couples budget is can help, but what I really need to understand is who you are and what this day means to you... I know photography, I know my equipment; I know a lot about weddings - but to put it all together, I need to know you!  I seldom "quote" in the traditional sense - all my prices are openly displayed on my website, so people know what is available and how much it costs before we meet.  When we meet,  I can show couples what the various options actually look like and help them design their own package, building a unique photography service within their budget. No pressure selling and no hidden costs.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Accepted Answer

Tip 1: actually handle some REAL albums in different styles and sizes;  - when your photographer knows in advance the albums you are going to get, they will shoot with that in mind; having the "right" images in the bag results in the most beautiful albums and reduces editing and design times.  2. Don't wait until after the wedding to decide what kinds of prints you might like: different prints benefit from different techniques at the time they are taken, and less expensive editing time after - metal prints, canvas, framed enlargements, Art-board prints, acrylic wall art are all easier to produce if the photographer knows they will be needed when he starts processing your photos, rather than after the RAW images have been developed.  3. Don't be misled by the apparent savings of a "disk-only" package: the cost of processing photos to professional standards is never less when a third party has to do it; and there is always a risk when all a photographer has committed  to is a disk of images; it is far better to have someone commit to delivering "real" photos... that way, they have to be sure the quality of the photos really is high enough to enlarge, print etc.instead of claiming it was the way you used the photos or someone else's poor work that resulted in your disappointment.

We charge a simple flat rate to which couples can add just the features they want.   Our Packages are fully customisable and offer even greater savings  They all include unlimited hours, unlimited images, travel, and the option of free hair styling and bridal make-up.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Our wedding photography fees are usually paid in two parts - a small deposit two weeks in advance of the wedding day, and the balance when the images are ready to deliver.   We prefer to accept paymant by direct bank transfer.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Wedding and Family photography is a broad area - maternity and baby bumps, weddings and engagements, family and individual portraits, baby and newborn photos - we do it all! But beyond all, it is the Wedding Day that is central to everything we do at Practicaps Photography: for us,  it is the joy and love and trust expressed in the marriage that binds all the rest together.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Apart from my Licentiate qualification with the National Photograpic Society, I am a full member of Wedding and Portrait Photography International, the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers, and the World Institute of Photographic Masters. I have a Diploma in Professional Photography, degrees from several Australian universities  and the experience gained from photographing  more than 300 weddings from many cultures.
