How did you decide to get into your line of work?

In the early 1970's I worked for a family business creating souvenir tea towels and tablecloths.  Part of my job was creating images for their designs, researching and also photographing the products to create lookbooks.  Since then, that's been my life.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

In 2010 Skovell photography had 64 start ups come through our studio doors. Most were people who recently lost their full time jobs and required portraits or product shots. Two in particular became run away successes who to this day refer to my images and my attitude in their belief in themselves.

I really do get a buzz in helping start ups gain breakthrough success in their business via my images. The studio has excellent facilities for clothing changes, make up, fashions, dramatic backgrounds and a up to date digital workflow designed to make your goals achievable faster and easier than ever imagined. The easiest way to cut through the noise of hundreds of "photographers" is to view their website and see if they have created images that fit your product range or style of images that you have in mind.  The next step is to see their work space, is it professional or a "back yard studio" Skovell photography has its own fully equipped studio in Elsternwick.

The most obvious term of reference by anyone who has never experinced a studio photography session is: how much? My long time answer is - how long is your piece of string?  There is no fixed price to creating a folio, each assignment has its own requirements, which is why we insist on meeting our prospective clients at the studio for a no obligation consultation.

Our band of network partners are quite proficient in graphic arts, publication production, web design, e-commerce design, make up, food styling, interior styling and video productions. Each of my team is responsible to each other to provide the best quality service available for each other to do their job.  It all starts with your photography session.

Each brief has its own specific requirements and we do not start any assignment without meeting our prospective clients and obtaining a full brief. Corporate head shots and family sessions being the exception. Over a superb espresso we aid our prospective clients in fully understanding what they wish to achieve so that they are totally ready for their sessions.

Everyone wants to save money, the best way for you to save is to prepare everything well in advance of your session. I will go through all the necessary steps to aid you to save a lot of money. 1. make sure all your products are presentable 2. label all your products 3. have all your products available on the day of your session.

If your business is in start up mode, (less than 6 months old), I will happily guide you through the detail of creating professional folio of what you do. If your budget is severely limited I will attempt to create a folio within your budget, and offer a web ready copy of your folio at no extra charge.

The full value of an estimate will cover things like studio usage, digital capture, digital processing, post production, styling, make up, studio lighting and equipment, file management and delivery. Our pricing structure is open and transparent so you will know what is included and more importantly not included.  There are many "photographers" who claim to have a studio and can do "anything" but the bottom line is - are you happy as a client for the price you just paid?

How do you normally charge for your service?

Depending on the type of work required our pricing reflects the real value of time and production of a quality image folio. All pricing is based on estimates - there are no fixed quotes. As most studio assignments are pretty standard in nature we can accurately estimate what value your project budget will need to be and how long it will take. From a standard packshot to a full service brief.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

With an advanced diploma of illustrative photography from P.S.C. Melbourne Skovell photography has been operating full-time since 1998 and part time since 1990. I was one of the first photo services to go digital and have used all the skills from film technology and darkroom science into the present work flow. There is very little that can't be done with the tools at my disposal.
