Accepted Answer

Yes, i'm insured for two  million dollars in public liability , and yes I will always back up my work should there be an issue.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

As a country kid from a farm in north west Victoria with an elder brother who took over the farm , I wanted to move to Melbourne for a tertiary education. Having graduated in the middle of a recession when tertiary education was free for all [can you believe that now?] my white collar dreams crashed .  Friends connected me with a plastering  business and it took off from there.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I have made some lifelong friends  of customers from this trade .... too many stories from babies[ great for business] to weddings to even a 100th birthday party. The best result was sponsorship from Boral  to enter a car in the Grand Prix Rally to Adelaide where I met my wife!!!!!!  Hard to top that one.

What do you like most about your job?

I like it's energy, the fact that you make a real difference to a customers project in a short period of time. Plasterboard defines spaces quickly... it turns a pile of sticks into a living space in a day. Customers like that.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Accepted Answer

I think the customer should ask providers for their  work history if recommendations are not available, perhaps a call to a previous customer to settle  the nerves.   I'm happy to do this.

Naturally the most common question people ask  is how much ,  and when can you do it? My answer is , let me work it out and then , when do you need the job done?

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

I have been in business for 35 years,  many of my clients have supported me for that long...... just as I have supported them when they need me.  I have a Working with Children Certificate and a Police Check to allow me to work in school and other sensitive areas.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Because I'm probably the best educated  and cultured plasterer in Melbourne, and better mannered than most.(what went wrong with my life!!!!) Seriously, I like doing it , I'm honest, reliable , a good tradesman , socially acceptable and amused by all this self praise.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

If I have to present a quote I need to know every pertinent detail.  All the specs on the materials required,the volume of plasterboard required, the timing of the job etc  There is no joy going in blind.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Keep the job as simple as possible 2. Describe the job as accurately as possible [misleading information is a disaster] 3. Present the job as clean as you can [I hate mess just as much as you]

Yes,  for customers who show respect ,  friendliness etc I have the Customer of the Year Award. A great bottle of champagne to the winner to celebrate that trades and customers can get along .

What makes your pricing competitive?

To put it simply I usually  work alone, saving on all the compliance costs of being an employer. If extra hands are needed I have a pool of plasterers I know to call upon on daily contract rates.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I'm flexible, happy to work for an hourly rate but mostly I prefer to offer a fixed price with no surprises for anyone.  On the smaller jobs I only ask for payment on completion.   I will take cheque/cash or eft .

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

The smaller plastering jobs are what I look for that may include minor carpentry work and painting in domestic and commercial areas. I'm happy to work on weekends to suit customers needs

I have over three decades of experience..... from the Victorian era restoration work to high rise apartments, shop fitting - making all sorts of architectural  shapes to shop fronts and ceilings, way out warehouse conversions , even a mini Colosseum for a restaurant.   But mostly it's domestic extensions and renovations.
