How did you decide to get into your line of work?

When the partners founded Davenak it was because we realised other Australian small businesses were experiencing the same pain we ourselves experienced over a time frame  - spanning the last twenty years.  While I had the technical background to cope and learn valuable lessons from the experience – most small business do not have that luxury.  As a 30 year veteran computer programmer, starting out when computers were still printing out only on paper – not screens – I know I could help local businesses. With Davenak’s other business partner being a qualified, experienced teacher we had the right founding mix of technology and people skills to deliver small business a quality, friendly, Australian owned and operated service.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

In 2009 one of our customers, Paul, was reduced to intermittent Yellow Pages directory calls.  Business had shrunk commensurate with the size of the Melbourne Yellow Pages (less than half the size it was.)  After we rebuilt his website, switched his search engine targeting from "Melbourne" to suburbs nearer to his business (he has a mobile business where he must travel to his customers) Paul began booking more customers than the when the Yellow Pages was still working for him.  Even better, because they were local people his bookings were more profitable as his petrol expenses and time travelling were massively reduced.

Helping businesses to make more money, using their website.  Nothing beats the satisfaction of hearing a customer say things like "I've never been so busy, I'm almost overloaded."  These are usually the customers who follow our advice to the letter - and understand their website is a tool of persuation - not just a pretty advertisement.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

When looking for Internet Marketing Consultants and Web Designers never ask "How Much?" at the outset.  Rather - ask them to explain to you how they can achieve the primary problem you're looking to solve through their services.    Next - ask them for an onsite consultation.  While it is normally at your premises - it can be at their's if that suits you.  Finally - if they don't ask you at least TEN questions about your business, products, competitors, customers, staff etc - and only talk about "design" or "Facebook" you'll know you're dealing with an amateur who doesn't understand why businesses need a website to begin with.

Most customers immediately ask us for a "ball park figure."  The reality is that a "ball park figure" is generally inadequate and where some agencies give one - the results more often than not fail to achieve measurable business goals.  We don't push for a sale during the consultation.  We give you room to think, breathe and consider the options we put to you.  We follow up - by email or post - with a proposal that often includes options for you to choose from.   We explain, to each of our customers, we are results orientated.  A website is not a "brochure".  When it's treated like one it fails to perform it's primary purpose - converting targeted visitors to leads and/or sales.  Sadly most business websites are indeed no more than brochures.  Our clients consistently out perform their competition - with all - and without exception - increasing their sales volume through their websites.  This is about more than design.  It's about understanding your business, customers, products and competition.  The consultation achieves this end.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Before providing a quote we require our 30 step consultation to be completed. This includes meeting with a consultant, discussing your business situation and goals, your products, what makes your business unique and where you want your business to head into the future.  Depending on this consultation and how detailed you can answer the consultation may offer you the opportunity to take the 30 steps away with you to complete in your own time.  Once the 30 steps have been completed we can issue a quote based on your unique business and budget.  Most customers find the 30 step consultation alone gives them insights into their business far beyond web designs and internet marketing - even for the few that decide not to proceed at this time,

How do you normally charge for your service?

Our initial consultation is free and within the Melbourne Metro area it's usually onsite, though we have a boardroom available if you'd rather visit us.  We issue a fixed quote on our products and services.  Because our consultations are thorough and broad we find most customers find the options and services delivered well and truly serve their needs.  Most Website start at around $1200 for a basic small business website and range upwards according to your needs.
