Frequently Asked Questions
What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?
I have an accounting degree as well as being a member of CPA Australia. I have provided both bookkeeping and financial accounting services over the years to numerous businesses, from sole traders to large multi-million dollar companies.
Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?
Experience, as well as great training, counts when it comes to looking after your finances. Not only can I provide a general bookkeeping service, I have the experience to analyse your financial reports as well as your business processes so as to give you expert advice. The services I provide can be tailored made to your particular requirements.
How do you normally charge for your service?
I charge a flat hourly rate that is less than most other bookkeeping businesses. I do not mind at all if my time is spent doing general bookkeeping work or providing more expert accounting services and advice. There are no extra or hidden charges, which includes not charging extra to lodge your BAS, which most others do.
Are there any special offers you would like to offer to Oneflare customers?
As well as a free initial meeting, Oneflare customers will get an ongoing 10% discount off the normal hourly rate for as long as they hire Marshall Bookkeeping and Accounting Services.
What makes your pricing competitive?
For a fee less than most bookkeepers, you can have an educated and experienced accountant who can first of all enter your data correctly and efficiently, then analyse it to give you great insights into your business and how best to grow it.
How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips
Sort your receipts out by keeping them in some kind of order.
File required information, such as ATO letters, payroll, super, etc, so that you can quickly access the information.
Keep accurate records of your inventory and assets.
I can do all of the above for you but it may be time consuming.
Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?
One area I specialise in is getting a business that has fallen behind with their paperwork and lodging their BAS back up to date. Also, I am experienced in analysing a business and identifying inefficiencies in their processes and procedures so that costs can be cut.
Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?
A couple of years ago I received a call from a retail shop who had not lodged their quarterly BAS for two years due to cash flow issues, and understandably the ATO were becoming more demanding and the shop was close to declaring bankruptcy. They had their receipts but they were just thorwn into a large box. I talked to the ATO to come to an arrangement with them then I sorted the shop's paperwork and lodged their BAS and produced their accounts for that period of time. Going forward, following my help and advice, the shop no longer has debts and cash flow issues and is now making a good net profit for the owners.
What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?
Before beginning, I like to know the business structure, such as is it a sole trader, partnership or company. Also, whether I would be working on or offsite. I prefer to work offsite, and it can easily be done with technology, but I am happy to work onsite too. Other things that I like to know include are there any staff employed and are the current accounts and BAS up to date.
What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?
Customers should ask about the service providers experience and level of education. Regarding experience, customers should ask about the type of businesses the bookkeeper or accountant has done work for and how they helped that business to both grow and comply with legislation, particularly around payroll.
Customers should ask for a full disclosure of the fees charged. Some bookkeepers charge extra just to lodge the BAS as quite often they rely on a third party company to do this for them as they are not BAS service provider. I know of bookkeepers who charge their clients $60-65 to do this. I don't as I flat hourly rate with no extra or hidden fees.
What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy getting to know a business and working out how best to make it grow. By providing a bookkeeping service I get to see exactly what the revenue and expenses are. From there I like to use my accountancy training and experience to look more closely at the figures and other data to give valuable advice to the owners.
What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?
Trust is everything. Bookkeepers and accountants are privy to private information of businesses and I take confidentiality very seriously. My customers can trust me to keep their information and our conversations private. My reputation is very important to me, so as well as being trustworthy I am also reliable. If I say I am going to be somewhere at a given time, then I will be. Also, if I say that I will have a client's accounts done by a certain date then I make sure that that happens.
How did you decide to get into your line of work?
I first studied accountancy 27 years ago as part of a business studies course. I found that it suited my numerical brain as well as my strong attention to detail, inquisitive mind and problem solving skills.
What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?
I am mainly asked about my experience, to which I list the long line of businesses that I have worked for over the years, either as an employee or as a hired bookkeeper or financial accountant. I inform them that I worked for different businesses from a wide range of industries. Some are sole traders others are multi-million dollar businesses with complex multi-entity business structures.
Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?
Yes, I have professional indemnity insurance, which is something all bookkeepers and BAS Service Providers should have as it is a legal requirement for registration with the Tax Practitioners Board. I also guarantee the accuracy of my work and will always double check the figures before lodging any BAS.
