Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

I guarantee all my work unconditionally against failure in reasonable use.  I use the strongest glues, best joinery processes (tenons, dominos, foxed/spliced tenons) and fully joined backings.  It is my intention the work outlives the client.

What do you like most about your job?

Accepted Answer

The long hours. I enjoy what I do, so I put an uneconomic quantum of work into each job. Each has little details that take it from, for example, from "a box" into a wow-factor mantelpiece party conversation.  I enjoy hearing back from people long after the job is done or receiving praise via a referred friend.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Q#1 - when will it be ready  :)  A - usually about three weeks. Q#2 - what will it look like .... A - I love to use Sketchup and will happily spend all the needed time tweaking a design until we get exactly what you want.  You will receive plenty of pictures of exactly what you will receive even before we start Q#3 - Can I provide my own materials? A - absolutely. I prefer to work this way. It eliminates many of the mysteries of wood colour variation and any possibility of disappointments.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

I take my time. My work is never rushed. Every part of the job is discussed with the client beforehand so we gain a mutual understanding of what is needed... I don't mind taking extra time to complete the "fiddly bits" or details that are never seen.  I enjoy, genuinely, the excitement on the commissioner's face when they receive their work.  This gives me the most pleasure.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Here is why NOT - I don't do rush jobs... things overnight or "yesterday".  I give each of my clients my full time and attention.  I take time in selecting timbers, glues, finishes and talk (information, QA, emails, etc).  This isn't to say I'm not rapid - I'm very fast - but this is due to muscle-skill and reflex borne of long experience. Each cut with the saw, chisel or stroke is precise and exacting. Its efficiency without waste nor error. Once the job is begun, progress is very quick.  I'm not a whack-a-nail-in-it carpenter, but a workman who has a far deeper understanding of the materials and processes. This translates into fine and exact workmanship.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Timber type, paint and/or finish, dimensions, pictures (previously done? or examples close to outcome?), expected price, timeframe and (hopefully) photos of where the item might sit.  Measurements end up being one of the greatest problems.  I always ask clients to measure THREE times to be absolutely certain.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1 - Take time to discuss with me what you *think* you need. I am very happy to write long emails with detailed descriptions and information, and point you to additional resources/books/readings before we start.  2 - Use Google Images to find styles you like. Pour over magazines and start a portfolio.  3 - If you have doubts, or want to change your mind after we start, this is perfectly fine, but tell me ASAP, for waste is always the destroyer of price.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Invoice or 30% up front. All prices are guaranteed, but I do lower them if the job or materials are cheaper.  I charge only for the materials I use, not what I buy for the job.  The client is *very welcome* to supply materials. I find this helps smooth the road and I'm happy to help with the selection process and providers.
