How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Fixing and upgrading computers has always been my hobby.  After 15 years as full time developer for large corporations, I decided that helping small companies and individuals would be more personally rewarding.

I have managed to start several 'dead' computers by simply pressing the 'correct' start button, rather than the reset button or the CD/DVD eject button.

For unbiased, reliable and up-to-date advice on software/hardware options available for immediate and future needs.  I have been exposed to all platforms (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Linux) not just as a plain computer technician but as a database administrator and software developer. I spend a lot of my spare time keeping up with the latest electronic and IT trends and developments.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

1. The age, brand and model of any devices you are having issues with (computers, printers, phone, modems, etc.). 2. Any special software application you regularly use, e.g. AutoCAD, MYOB, etc.   The software (operating system) version, e.g. Windows 10, iOS El Capitan, android Marshmallow, etc.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

If possible: 1. Provide details of any changes that may have been done, no matter how trivial, prior to experiencing problems. 2. Ensure that you have all passwords readily available. 3. Provide details of the devices with issues (brands and models).

Free virus checks and computer optimisation (up to two Microsoft Windows computers) when other issues require a consultation of at least one hour.

The experience gained over a number of years ensures that the time troubleshooting issues is minimal. In many cases, several solutions to an issue are provided.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

In lots of cases, finding the problem can take a lot longer than fixing it. For this reason It's very difficult to provide a fixed quote for most jobs until contact is made with the customer with the opportunity to ask some relevant questions. Where a quote cannot be provided in the first instance, on-site visits incur a minimum of $49 for the first half hour, $49 per half hour after that.  No call-out fees are charged for visits to locations less than 10 km from office.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Upgrading specialist software installed on local machines to services available in the 'cloud'. Additionally, to all my customers, I always provide the option of using reliable open-source and free software, even though it may be detrimental to my business' bottom line (no commissions or trailing fees).

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have been involved in computers since the early days of 'personal computing' as a user, database administrator, software developer, and software/hardware troubleshooter. Upgrading parts within a computer (memory, hard disks, etc.) is second nature to me, when you consider that my first memory upgrade required a soldering iron!
