How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I've always been involved in the creative industries: as a graphic designer, and a marketing manager. Interior design was a natural progression, and I decided to study design when I reached a point in my life where I asked myself: "what do I really want to do in life?" rather than "what should I do?" It's the first time that my job is part of my lifestyle and I've never looked back.

What do you like most about your job?

For me, design is about people: helping clients function better and feel better in their living space, not just creating a space that looks good. It's important to provide a service that is friendly, personable, non-intimidating and focused on listening to what my clients want. That's the whole point of being a designer.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Clients always want to know how your service works and how much it costs. Clients have joked about their initial fears of inviting a designer to their home: being judged, being expected to commit to spending their life savings, being told to throw out all of their furniture, and ending up with a look that has the designer’s stamp all over it. This of course doesn't have to be the reality.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

My business is designed to be transparent. I charge an hourly rate but then provide trade discounts to clients on any purchases I recommend. This means clients always know that they are getting good value for money, and everything is up front. I also aim to make sure that clients feel at ease: my job as a design professional isn't to judge others but to help them.

My philosophy is that interior design advice should be available to everybody, whether your budget is $500 or $500,000. My service is based on being friendly, transparent and non-intimidating.

It's always good to know the basics of a job: what you would like to achieve, an approximate budget, and any definite ideas you have. It's also important to know what you don't want. Finally, design is about both aesthetics - the looks, and practicalities. For example, working out how you will use a space, whether there are any practical considerations such as safety, living with children …..

Employing the services of a designer can help you save money in a number of ways. Trade discounts are one way of saving money through a designer, avoiding costly mistakes by getting professional advice on appropriate choices is also important.
