How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Since I was a little girl my weekends were spent moving my room around, changing my bed linen and finding different looks for the same room, little did I know it but this experimenting would one day be what I loved helping other people to do - find the best way a space can work for it's inhabitants and what they use it for. I love to find the secret potential in tricky spaces so Interior Problem solving was the passion that lead me to study Interior Design.

What do you like most about your job?

I love that because everyone is different my job is always changing, I get to help people bring out their creative side in their homes and reflect their personality in their habitat, it's a really rewarding thing.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

How much will it cost? Because every space is different this is hard to answer online, but I can quite often give a very accurate quote over the phone once having discussed the job in more detail with the client.   What can I provide that a stylish friend/relative can't?Firstly I can provide a service that is a.) tailored to your specific needs/style for the space in question and b.) will give you more confidence to be able to select further items/colours/materials based on the personal style I've helped you discover you do actually have. Secondly I am able to get you items that you didn't even know were available through wholesalers and trade suppliers, I'm also able to pass on discounts from selected stores saving you money.     Should we be updating our style to the current trend? Not necessarily, if the current trend in magazines is contemporary minimalism and you live in a double fronted brick veneer house built in 1970 your home and likely the way you use it is not going to suit the current trend. I always look at the bigger picture for homes, Firstly are you going to be staying here for a long period of time, 10 years or more, or is this a stepping stone house that you're planning to sell in the next five years? if you are staying then changes I suggest would be things that will help you live and relax in the space specific to your lifestyle. If you are selling then changes I would suggest are things that make the home functional for you while you are there but won't be polarising for buyers looking to purchase down the track. Secondly, the current trend may not suit you or the things that you would naturally gravitate toward, there is no point changing every item in your home when a new trend comes out, you will waste a tonne of money and almost certainly drive yourself crazy chasing your tail trying to keep up, if you only buy things that fill a need through function or form (they're useful or beautiful to you) then you will find that you are able to sustain your own style and it will grow and change with you and your lifestyle, rather than the changing Vogue season.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

Whilst I love new design and innovation I don't like to sell people 'on trend' designs for the sake of being 'current'. I prefer to help people bring out their own interior style that grows with them and can incorporate new trends without needing a complete overhaul to update the spaces. I love to design for you, not to pad out my folio with 'in fashion' photos!

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

My aim is to help you bring out your natural style in your home, a style you may not be aware of yet. This will make it easier for you to make further selections and develop your own space as you like.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Accepted Answer

The size of the project ie: fresh paint colour scheme, furniture selection and layout, single area renovation (bathroom or Kitchen) new home colour & furniture update or whole home renovation etc, knowing the extent of the project up front helps to eliminate any unforeseen costs.  Whether clients are wanting me to do all the sourcing of items, wanting to me to come with them to assist, are wanting me to provide them with supplier details etc and do it themselves, or a combination.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Shorten your consult time needed by having clippings etc of your ideas. 2. If you have a floor plan provide your designer with a copy, this will save them time and you money. 3. If you're looking to replace kitchen/bathroom look into selling them online there are companies who buy them & usually will even take them away for you.

What makes your pricing competitive?

My pricing can be flexible to suit the needs of the client and their project, this makes it more relevant to many people who may only need a nudge in the right direction to get their project going and also those people who don't know where to start but have a goal in mind. I find that often people will rule out an interior designer thinking that they are too expensive and then need to got looking for someone down the track after they've spent too much money on items that they possibly didn't need.

How do you normally charge for your service?

because of the type of work I do the prices range depending on what the job requires: Color/Styling Consultations :$150.00 - $350.00  Design/Decoration package : $350.00 - $1000.00  One off Design advice/consult 2.5 hours in home: $450.00   Hourly rate for a more tailored service (Consultation, Sourcing and Design work): $75.00 per Hour, minimum for 3 Hours for in home Consults and Sourcing trips.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Whilst completing my Diploma of Arts in Interior Design at NMIT I worked one day a week for an Architectural firm in Melbourne, gaining a lot of documentation and material knowledge, after completion of this course I took further studies in building design (drafting) to better understand the construction processes and standards we need to adhere to in Australia when building or renovating.  I then worked in the kitchen and flooring industries for four years to gain further knowledge of the practical processes that are involved when renovating or building which helps a lot when it comes to getting clients the best result and understanding the practical side of bringing ideas into reality.
