Frequently Asked Questions
Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?
What sets me apart from other designers is my unique flare for design. I don't have a style per se, my designs are responsive to client requirements, the site conditions and my own intuition. I am very passionate about what I do, and I love designing spaces that enhance my clients' lifestyles.
What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?
I graduated B. Arch. (Honours) from Curtin Uni'. I am a 'Greensmart Professional' (HIA accredited course in sustainable design principles). I also worked on very large scale construction projects in the Pilbara, so I have developed a good sense for 'buildability' issues.
Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?
As a lover of Nature, I believe meaningful spaces can support people in re-connecting with Nature. Designers should be aware of the need for responsible design, not just for reasons of conservation, but for occupant comfort. Therefore, I aspire towards beautiful and sustainable residential design.
How do you normally charge for your service?
Traditionally architects have locked clients into full architectural design fees. I believe in a more flexible approach, opting for a selection of packages to suit different clients. The most important thing is to first understand my clients' needs and then to determine a clear and defined brief.
What makes your pricing competitive?
I understand that clients come to architects hoping to realise their 'Dream Home'. It's a huge financial commitment, and lengthy professional relationship. I am sensitive and responsive to my clients' needs, and therefore offer flexibility in my design fees.
Are there any special offers you would like to offer to Oneflare customers?
I would normally include a site visit and brief development in my 'Feasibility Package', but am happy to offer (this part of the package) free of charge to Oneflare clients.
How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips
Choosing the right block of land is paramount, particular if intending to incorporate Environmental Sustainable Design Principles (Passive Solar Design). If you are aware of a reputable builder, that can be a good head start. Being aware of the spaces/ space sizes you need is also important.
What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?
The Australian Institute of Architects recommends architects charge at least 6.5% of total construction costs to perform their service with a suitable duty of care. I don't adhere to this strictly, but it is a general indicator of what services an architect would need to provide.
Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?
Yes, I have $1,000,000 Professional Indemnity cover. I can only proceed on a project once a client is satisfied with the design, and so to that end, yes my design work is guaranteed.
What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?
Being so passionate about what I do, and being a professional that is responsive to my clients needs, I get very 'emotionally invested' in my work. Moreover I am a perfectionist, so I will work and work at my designs until I am satisfied of their performance.
What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?
Fees are crucial for clients, and as previously mentioned, I offer flexibility in my design fees. 'Buildability' is also an important topic, so showing clients previous built work helps. Am I good to work with? References from previous clients will satisfy this issue.
What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?
Do you have flexible design packages? Do you design according to Environmental Design Principles and occupant comfort? Do you design according to clients' needs, or do you 'tell' the client what they are having? Do you provide 3D imaging to best illustrate your design to clients?
What do you like most about your job?
Beauty is a very uplifting concept. A good design should also enhance, in an 'organisational' manner, how occupants go about living their lives. Incorporating natural principles as much as possible into a space also increases the occupants wellbeing. Enhancing lifestyles is my passion.
Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?
Yes, some clients of mine have just completed the construction of their new home at Cape Naturaliste, Dunsborough. It is a very unique and complex design, which, with my support, they built themselves. They are very much 'in love' with their new 'Dream Home'.
How did you decide to get into your line of work?
I first tried my hand at Engineering, but quickly discovered the creative component was greatly missing. The more I discovered what architecture truly was, the more I became passionate about it. I enjoy the professional aspect to it, and I am also very interested in construction.
