Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

I hold Professional Indemnity insurance with AON. I work to the highest standard, what we call Best Practice and to the Ethical guidelines set out by the CPA and NTAA. I'm a BAS Agent; I work in a JV with a Tax Agent, Monika Shaw. My work is guaranteed to the extent that I have all the pertinent information.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I've been in bookkeeping and accounting all of my business life. I love accounting and taxation and figuring out how to put these numbers to best use. I use the Cloud technology throughout my business and teach clients how to implement this fantastic efficiency into their business. I love digital marketing and digital design.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I'm currently trying to help a Quickbooks client change systems to a new cloud-based system that will integrate with his other business systems. A could-based auto-bank-feed solution will save him hours of work and paper shuffling. This client has a simple QBO system set up and only needs to code his data once a year for tax purposes. He wants to continue to use his ledger, which is fine but also pays $17 a month for his QB sub which satisfies me. He's a Sole Trader earning under $200k with only one contractor so it works for him and for me.

What do you like most about your job?

Working remotely means no commuting. I can work my own hours which I love. I have the freedom to work with whom I choose - both clients and subcontractors. I have an office space I use for meetings.I just love the work and the freedom it gives me.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Hiring a Business Services accountant isn't as simple as hiring a Personal Tax Accountant. I'm a Business Services Accountant so I encapsulate tax, HR, management and financial accounting (and more) all in one. Ask your accountant about their availability to discuss business related questions. Systemise. You need a digital workflow with cloud based solutions if you work with me. Explain your business situation to them in your own words, better still write it all out.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

One of the most common questions I get is - What do you charge?. Whilst its an important consideration, its not the only one and I will not haggle over price. I try not to compete on price insofaras I provide a unique specialised service to my clients - I get to know them personally -  a trust relationship is built.  My motto is to give more value than i'm charging for.  I'm competitive on price and win on value.

I'm well regarded in the Xero community, I have Accounting connections in the Brisbane community.  I share alot of knowledge on Facebook. I love learning and getting better at what I already do. Don't choose me on price alone.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I have a set of questions I ask at the interview before I give a quote. Some jobs/tasks are easier to give an accurate quote on than others. If there's a chance of overrun of costs, I'll let you know before I quote your job. I don't quote to "get work" if I can help it to avoid losses. I recently spent 4 hours preparing a quote for a trading entity which she decided not to go forward with. This isnt something I do often; I usually read the signs better than this.

For an accounting system set up: 1. Gather together all paperwork to support the transactions 2. Have your bank data available in Excel format for upload to a Xero or QBO file 3. Have your last years Financials available for the opening balances

What makes your pricing competitive?

Cloud based bookkeeping is really just managing the flow of data so that by itself isn't worth much as an ongoing charge. The value I provide is in Office Management (which was a big part of my working life when I was an employee) Customer Relations and helping with Running a Business. I have standard charges for task oriented work which are available on demand for those who are price shopping.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I charge by quote or by the price I've set for the job or task within my business.  I offer Xero onsite training at $220 per hour. This may include setting up your system correctly, correcting errors and showing you how the whole systems works, how it integrates with other systems to make bookkeeping easier. Its directed at getting you started so you can maintain your system yourself. My hourly rate for remote Accounting services is $97 and for Bookkeeping, $66. My advisory rate is $147.50 with varying set prices for Tax Returns. Tax Returns for Sole Traders start at $230 and will inevitably require more work at $97 per hour. Sole Traders may be unable to deduct business expenses. Find out if you are one of these people with me. Many businesses I see register and become a company not realising what that actually involves. They don't understand that "operating whilst insolvent" is a breach of the Corporations Act 2001 and as such are required to liquidate. The companies and businesses I work with get the best of me. I'm upfront with businesses about what I offer. Some people don't trust accountants. If you take my advice, systemise and develop a relationship with me, you'll see results. I help my clients run their business and I do that well because I have a background in working in alot of different types and sizes of businesses. Can an accountant help you run your business? It depends. Can I - yes. I work with small businesses up to $1m in turnover. I ask clients to work to a Vision, set Goals, Pivot when things get tough. I don't work deeply within the Business Structures and Tax vertical but I associate with accountants who do.  I believe in working with businesses with whom I am a good match.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I work with clients who need a system set up. I require systems to be set up. Bookkeeping can be harder than it looks I have the expertise to get these jobs done on a regular basis. I specialise in helping businesses to organise themselves into a profitable business and stay profitable. Consult an accountant before you start a company, before you invest in forming a Trust - know the risks of doing it incorrectly. A Trust for instance will not protect your assets if you are the Trustee. I have discussions with other accountants on a regular basis concerning new trends, new ATO updates and rulings; accountants who share the answers to questions I don't deal with on a daily basis. I specialise in helping my clients run their businesses I charge $6600 a year paid monthly for this service.
