SMH architecture and construction is fully insured as this is a requirement for all registered Architects.  I guarantee customer satisfaction.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I believe every individual has particular talents and potentialities that can lead to, if cultivated, to a pathway of success and fulfillment.  Encouragement from this around you in formative years are also important in the "cultivation" stage of life.  I've always been drawn to design, have loved to draw, dream and conceptualize.  Studying Architecture with a specialization in Timber design at the University of Tasmanian helped to consolidate  my passion.  Working with a number of great Architects and builders both locally and internationally helped to further shape and mold my work.  It is a tremendous privilege to work in such an incredible place as Tasmania and to make a living practicing what I love.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

A customer of mine, before they were my client, was seeking an Architect.  They had a very strong sense of vision and purpose so they sought the best Architect in the world, that they knew of.  This famous Canadian Architect spoke to them at length, and said that for their ambitious project they needed some one young, as he was entering the golden years of his life, he stated that a young Architect would embrace the challenge and be able to think outside of the box.  The old Architect was my previous boss, he then personally recommended me and the outcome is the Baha'i Centre of Learning building at 1 Tasman Highway, Hobart.  It's a building  I'm very proud of and could not have happened without an amazing back story of which this is just one chapter.

What do you like most about your job?

I love working with clients who have a strong vision for their project, with an exciting or challenging building site, who appreciate working in a spirit of collaboration with my company to assist them to achieve their goals.  The design process itself, especially when challenging can be really exciting and the outcomes are very satisfying.

Establish at the outset the goals of the project and the scope of work, and then be sure to compare services apple to apple.  I provide a customer guide to all of the services I provide as part of my scope of work to assist in the investigation stage when clients are comparing my services to other professionals.

How long have you been working in the industry?  Over 16years, including international experience, in both designed and construction/building.  Do you have good builders you work with.  Yes, absolutely, strong relationships with building companies define my business and determine what is achievable.

I have a high standard of personal ethics which applies to my life in every respect.  This translates to my business naturally.  The foundational virtues are honesty and trustworthiness.  When choosing an Architect it's essential to have a good personal relationship and to establish trust.  Openess and transparency during the process, and continual communication are essential tools to facilitate this trust.  A strong value in my business is that I always complete what I start, no matter the complexity.  The building industry requires a great deal of patience to navigate and it's important to have strong core values that keep a steady ship on track.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I need to know your site, the immediate context, where the neighbouring buildings are, the orientation, shape of the block, and topography.  I can determine this from a quick initial site visit, which is where I usually like to meet my clients.  I need to know what you want to achieve  in overview, the scope, scale and quality of the development your contemplating.  Usually this can be determined a quick, free of charge initial meeting on site, after which you will receive a quote the same day.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

A well prepared design brief agreed to by all the parties involved will save time and money at the design stage.  Apart from that it's my job to save you money through efficient design - I will work with you through every stage as required to facilitate the process and accompany you through the minefield of regulatory authorities, whilst always keeping your goals and dreams as the priority.

Low business overheads, and lightning fast CAD skills mean I can deliver quality in less time than competitors for overall savings.  Practical experience in building means the details are right first time.  Price is also about the cost of the final product and the ongoing running costs of the building designed.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Fixed price negotiated contract, for an agreed list of deliverables.  I offer a full service, medium and light services for progressively cheaper prices.  Smaller projects are also undertaken on an hourly rate, no project is to small.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Sustainability - energy efficiency, specifically super insulated, highly thermally efficient buildings, with due consideration to internal environment quality, air-tightness and thermal bridging.  This equals the most comfortable homes with the smallest heating and cooling bills on the market.
