How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I started off as a delivery driver for a retail shop in Crows Nest. After a year i has a choice to either go to the sales side or the workshop side of the business. I chose the workshop side. At first all we did was printers, faxes, copiers. Eventually we merged with another retail company who had an IT specialist, I trained under him for 5 years before he left the company, and I was now the only IT tech in the company. I had been doing that for about 21 years until I decided I wanted to go out on my own

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

My favorite customer story involves a fairly new Canon inkjet printer that was brought into us with jamming issues and a carriage error. Upon opening it up i found the cause of the jam. There was about $3000 in cash jammed inside. With out fail, i informed my boss, who rang the customer straight away. Turns out the customer was a nice old Italian man who does not trust banks so he hide cash around the house. I got $100 for my honesty.

What do you like most about your job?

I like the feeling of leaving a Job all fixed and running smoothly. Its that feeling of accomplishment. It can be better on certain jobs, like when you recover a customers data from ransomware attack, that is an awesome feeling when they have everything back and running without having to fork out a ransom

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

How many years have you had on the job? Or how much experience do you have? and Have you worked for a IT company in the past? That last question should reassure, a little, the customer in regards to your experience and with dealing with customers

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

They generally ask how often a machine should be maintenanced. I generally tell them it depends on the work load, but a rule of thumb is generally at least every 2 months for moderately used printers, and about 1 -2 months for PC in constant use.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

I have had 21 years experience in IT. I was with the first company for 12 years till we were bought out by the second company I worked for. I was the only IT Technician in the company, i built up a great repour with majority of our clients, I had been left by myself, countless times while the customer would run out to do an errand. It all those 21 years of faithful service, i never had a complaint about me or been accused of wrong doing

This one if hard to answer, Im only just starting out on my own, so most other service providers would have a reputation on here already. All i can say is that when it comes to charging customers, i can be quite fair and understanding, i never billed my total hours when i was working for a Retailer, i would let an hour slip here or there if i felt the job didn't warrant such big charges

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I need to obviously know the problem. I would also need to now what was being done before the problem occurred. Also any previous glitches that had been occurring in the days leading up to the fault. Basically every little detail can help solve the issue quicker

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1) Running an inbuilt windows cleaner called Diskcleanup can help with slowness issues, you can access it buy typing in the search bar at the bottom of the screen "cleanmgr", you select the local drive C from the menu and select and boxes that say temporary on the next screen. This could make a repair go bit quicker for a technician. 2) If you think you are infected with a nasty virus you can download a free scan tool called "AdwCleaner" , you can google it and it will be the first result. it does not install itself and can get rid of majority of nasty infections, which in tur would make the following cleanup by a tech a lot quicker 3) The most important thing a customer can do is have a continual backup regime in place. I generally recommend no less then 2 external HDD's that are rotated each backup. This guarantees redundancy and if a customers PC's gets infected with ransomware while a backup rive is connected to the PC, that backup data would be corrupted, a second disconnected drive means you will always have your data safe and will only lose a days work at most

What makes your pricing competitive?

My pricing is more competitive then some, but there are few that charge the same. What would make me competitive is if i go over the hour by only a few minutes, i wont normally charge the full hour. At best ill just not charge for it, or i may just charge a half hour price of $30

How do you normally charge for your service?

Because I'm new to this I'm guessing I would give PayPal a go. because it has buyer and seller protection, i would also accept cash and bank transfers too.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Not really. I did everything from PC maintenance, Setup new PC's data transfer, setup whole networks including running ethernet cable, installing switches, modems, routers, i can setup VOIP systems and custom VOIP servers, i even build custom firewalls that make your network very safe and secure. These firewalls are cheap to build but give you the level of protection, and possibly more, of a brand name firewall like cisco which cn cost around $5000 to $6000 just for the hardware

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

All my skills have come from on the job training of 21 years, While i did attend Canon, Brother, Kyocera, courses for their latest printers and copiers, In regards to PC's and Networks i was taught previous work colleague. I have done complete server rebuilds, recovered customers data from ransomware attacks, i have fixed many VOIP issues that phone companies refused to acknowledge. I have never waked away from a job because i could not do it. I am quite resourceful and don't give up
