How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I studied visual arts, commercial aviation & then drafting and finally settled on architecture as it involved everything I was looking for because I was always good at art but had quite a technical mindset as well.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

We have a number of clients who have set us up with their children to do a small project for them before getting us to do a larger project for the. A good way to set your children up with great house and try out the architect before you use them.

What do you like most about your job?

Most enjoy the surprise that people have when we come up with really different design solutions that they had never considered. The clients then start to imagine themselves in the new building and the project starts to come to life itself. We call this the persistence of a good design.

How long will you spend getting my design right? How do you approach council? Do you offer Contact Documentation? What is it? Can you show me an example? How will this help with the cost and quality of my project? Do you have any clients or projects that I can visit?

Most commonly ask if we have ever done a design project like theirs before. Usually we can show them a range of previous projects with similar elements or challenges like their project. This usually sets their minds at ease. People tend to come to architects with difficult or changing sites or problems that cant be solved readily. We love the challenge.

We stand by our clients when things sometimes get tough. We help hand select the right builder to go with the right clients and take the time to show our clients through a properly prepared contract with construction drawings to assist in making high quality buildings.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

We offer superior service by tailoring our services to our clients needs. We don't settle for anything less than high quality design. Our small size ensures that each client will communicate directly with either Lisa or Mel who are both registered architects in their own right.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Number of bedrooms required, number of bathrooms, master bed with ensuite & perhaps walk-in-robe, any outdoor areas required. Slope of the site, age of the building, any damage to existing building or need for renovate of existing. Flood prone or bushfire affected areas.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

1. Have your brief ready for the architect. 2. Have a budget in mind but consider if you add something really great to your house it may really improve the value of your property. 3. Start looking at the cost of items you can purchase yourself to have ready for the build.

What makes your pricing competitive?

We don't over design things or design things our clients can't afford to build. We involve builders early in the design process to make sure the project is on budget.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

We can charge lump sum, percentage based of the cost of construction or hourly or a combination of both. Often we fix the first two stages ie. sketch design and developed design (Council lodgement) & then use a percentage fee for the remainder.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

We mainly specialize in high end residential design. We tend to prefer an honestly with the use of materials with a focus on good planning, layout and design that means we can rely on passive solar design to improve the environmental performance of the building.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

We have a wide range of experience across most council areas in NSW helping us navigate council planning controls & processes efficiently & effectively. We both have more than 10 years experience. Our practice holds an an A+ membership with the Institute if Architects.
