How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I got into this line of work early, going straight into a design degree out of high school. It really seems inevitable looking back on it. Being a graphic designer is the perfect blend of art and the technical, both of which I was obsessed with. Even as a child under ten I would spend my free time cutting out images from magazines, photocopying type out of type books and pasting together pleasing layouts on subjects I was interested in. You could say I was a visual nerd. My passion for design really has never been unlit since.

What do you like most about your job?

Accepted Answer

I get to add beauty to the world, and create visual order out of chaos which then soothes people's senses and communicates the message clearly. I get to de-stress and excite clients about their projects and often times their heartfelt passions, by bringing together their abstract ideas into a cohesive and tangible whole that will serve their businesses or personal project. It's a satisfying process watching people see their visions realised.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

I urge the customer to really spend some time looking through the work on a designer's website firstly. My site can be found at www.cullumcreative.com. Design is a service profession, yes, serving the client's need, but more so than many professions, it really needs to be the right aesthetic fit between client and designer. There is still a unmeasurable side to design where the 'fit' needs to 'feel right'. Sit quietly and trust your instincts when choosing a designer.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

I am able to lean on both many years experience as well as a very youthful, engaged and excited attitude to my design work. You can expect a very personable experience with lots of communication and unique, stand out work as the result. I always provide very considered work, always strive for the beautiful in my work, and always solve the problem at hand so that you, the client, get what you need.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Accepted Answer

Be very clear about the scope of the work so I can build a quote accordingly. I like to quote upfront so that you the client and myself are very clear about the fees involved, so the more I understand the project, the more accurate the quote will be.  Have all the information ready before the job starts. For example if there is type/logos needed to go on a product label, if it is all finalised I won't need to charge for "author's corrections" when the text keeps changing and the design has to adjust accordingly.

What makes your pricing competitive?

Because I like to quote on an entire job, you will know where you stand fee wise and will not be given any rude surprises at the completion of the project. You can always be guaranteed I will put in my all, and you will probably be getting more hours and attention than I have costed in.

Question 7

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

I prefer to start with a meeting, either on the phone, in person or email, to gain a clear scope of the project. In this Oneflare set up, I won't charge for this meeting. I then will provide a Fee Proposal (Quote) which will be submitted to you for approval as to whether you want to work with me. I then ask for a 50% deposit of fees to begin the job, and the 50% balance of fees before hand over of the job files. I feel that knowing upfront what the job will cost serves both you the client and me the designer, all is clear and there is no hidden surprises.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Combined with my graphic design experience I have also worked in the fashion industry for over ten years, my role was predominantly producing the printed graphics for fabrics, that is all over repeat patterns known as 'surface design'. Bringing these skills back to graphic design, there is a warmth and professional integration whenever I work with illustration. I can always provide a very unique product above and beyond expectations.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have a long history in the design field with 20 years experience in the graphic and fashion industries. I was formally trained at University with a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Graphic Design and continue self learning and keeping up to date to this day. I combine experience as a self starter in my own businesses as well many years employed as a Designer, Illustrator and Art Director.
