Myotherapy is a form of physical therapy, originally based on the trigger point research by Dr Janet G. Travell (1901-1997), who co-authored Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction (1983, 1992). Myo- is a Latin prefix that refers to anatomical muscle (a field of study). Myofascial pain involves trigger point pain. RMIT University (Melbourne) established myotherapy as a process-oriented, quality based, clinical framework for physical therapy. It is the professional standard of record-keeping that differentiates myotherapists from remedial massage therapists. As myotherapy is a higher qualification, the health fund offers a higher rebate when claiming myotherapy. The term “remedial massage” is problematic because of its ambiguity. Common English usage of an adjective to qualify a service implies a brand or a style, however, remedial is not a style or type of massage. The correct definition of “remedial massage” is massage therapy applied to assist in rehabilitation, pain and injury management, typically musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries.
