How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have always enjoyed art, even from an early age. As a child I can remember spending most of my time drawing and being inspired to make and design anything and everything! This love of art and design has stayed with me throughout my life. It has developed and matured and now, I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else!

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

A brief about your business and what you are aiming to achieve from the project we will be working on.  I ask lots of questions and love it when my clients can provide me with visual examples of what they do and don't like. The more information you can give me upfront, the more cost effective your project will be.  You will be given a brief sheet before we begin, but it will include some of the following questions:  Who are you, what do you do?  What is your company’s history?  Who is the target audience for the project?  Are there any colors or fonts you do or don’t like?  Do you have any samples of designs you do and don’t like?  What copy (text) and images will you need to go with the design? Who will be providing these? What is your deadline?

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

BE PREPARED Supply all of your images and finalised (proof read) copy/text upfront. This will keep changes to a minimum, lowing your final costs.  CLEAR BRIEFING Know your target market and do your brand research before hiring a designer, so you're able to supply a clear brief explaining exactly what you want to achieve.  ONE POINT OF APPROVAL  Whilst it is great to have input from colleges and staff members, have a clear understanding of who will sign off on the job.

What makes your pricing competitive?

While my pricing doesn't compete with the likes of FIVER, my skill level and originality puts me in a completely different market. I am a home based studio, so you can expect high end agency quality without the high end agency fees.

I specialise in illustrative branding design and illustration. I have a bright design and illustration style suited to fun, quirky and colourful businesses.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

With 13 years experience in the “print world”, I’ve worn almost every hat on the rack, so you can guarantee I know my stuff. I formally trained as an Illustrator at Griffith University (QCA), but developed a love for graphic design toward the end of my studies. As a result I started working in the print industry to learn more. I now work part time as a pre press operator for a large print company and also freelance under my business name ‘Little Black Kat Creative’.
