I am a Chartered Accountant and Tax Agent with a public practice certificate.  I will provide high quality work and work with clients if their are any items requiring change.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I really was always interested in how small business worked as I worked for a very astute business owner when I was in my teens.  It really gave me the passion to work with small business clients and I love when I hear their successes.

I like being able to educate clients not only on their tax obligations but using systems and software to grow their small businesses.

What are your professional associations/qualifications?  How much experience do you have and do you have experience in dealing with clients with my specific criteria.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Customers often ask what is our process.  We like to meet clients in an initial meeting to collect information and to make sure we are the right fit.  From there we will quote if possible and then once the quote is accepted and the engagement letter is signed we will start work.  From there we would expect if all records were provided in a timely fashion to finish individuals returns within a week and small businesses within 4 weeks.

Our founder Stephen Brake is a Chartered Accountant with over 10 years of experience.  This professional recognition means that we have to uphold the standards of being a Chartered Accountant Firm.  We are also tax agents which carries commitments of the tax agent board.

Whilst we love providing the best tax outcomes for clients our service will always be more than just tax.  If we can provide advice or feedback on other matters such as marketing, software or strategic goals we will do so.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Scope of the work.  How many deductions, rental properties, investments and any complexities that aren't normal in a tax return.  Whether the small business clients have a computer system like Xero or MYOB and fully reconcile their accounts is also essential. How quickly things need to be done.

If a customer uses an accounting program like Xero or MYOB, fully reconciles the accounts and provides all relevant documents in a timely fashion when requested that definitely can save money.

We at Meritous provide value for money.  As we quote upfront there are never any surprises and we know that in the industry our prices are very competitive.  We look to build a monthly fee package for all of our small business clients to enable better cash flow management for them rather than  big fee at the end of each year.

How do you normally charge for your service?

For all work we quote upfront and ideally we seek to develop a monthly package that encompasses all services you will require in a 12 month period.  We focus on providing value to clients so if we have you a monthly fee basis then there are no issues regarding spending extra time helping you and your business.

We specialise in working with Construction and Medical clients however we do have clients in a number of different industries.
