I carry Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance through my membership of the Australian Federation of Civil Celebrants Inc, which remains current while I maintain membership

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

The journey to my role as a celebrant began over 10 years ago when my eldest daughter, knowing I had long had a desire to become a celebrant, asked me to register so I could perform her wedding. In those days there was a cap on the number of celebrants allowed in any area, so I was informed that there would be no more celebrants appointed in my area. I filed the desire away and when the industry was deregulated I completed the course and was appointed. As an added and very much cherished bonus, I was asked to officiate at my second daughter's wedding -and it just doesn't get any better than that!

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

At one beautiful wedding we were at the exchange of vows when the couple's little girl ran over and tugged on Mum's dress. Mum never missed a beat when she took the little girl's hand and said "Hang on a minute darling, I'm just getting married". It's a wedding I won't forget!

What do you like most about your job?

Meeting so many different people, and being there for you on the one day that will be remembered forever is the major bonus of my role. The feeling I get when we get to the part of the wedding ceremony where I can say "I now pronounce you married" is just the best feeling in the world! Very special for you, very special for me.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

What do you do on the day of my wedding? I'll arrive a half to one hour before starting time and will use this time to setup and check with other suppliers working towards your perfect ceremony (eg photographers). I'll always visit your venue beforehand to meet your hosts, and so I know where to go.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Most first ask my availability for their chosen date. If I am available I arrange a no obligation meeting if they live locally so they can see if I am the right celebrant for them. If they are interstate or overseas I will send them my details by email or phone them to introduce myself.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

As a Cairns marriage celebrant who supports marriage equality, I live and work in beautiful Far North Queensland. I offer you a huge range of choice in the content and performance of your ceremony, be it your dream wedding, a vow renewal after many years of happy marriage, or a naming ceremony for your newborn child. After thinking about what my point of difference to other celebrants is, I have realised that it is actually me - with me, what you see is what you get, and you will get the best me I can possibly give you. Your ceremony will be yours, what you want, which is what I care about - what we do on the day is your wedding, what you do for the rest of your lives together is your marriage. The only inclusions I insist upon are the legal ones required by law - the rest is up to you. One of my recent wonderful brides referred to me as her "go to celebrant" - I can be that for you too. What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

The main things I need to know are a definite date so I can check my availability, and the location of your ceremony. If ceremony is on one of our lovely islands, there is also the ferry ticket over to be included. I include areas within an hour's drive from Cairns, but anything above that will require a small extra payment.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Find or order your birth and other certificates straight away instead of having to order and pay express fees closer to the date of your ceremony.

What makes your pricing competitive?

Accepted Answer

My pricing is based on what a couple would pay to be married at the Court House, plus a small amount as I come to your venue, you have a choice of ceremonies and I include an hour of travel time in my price. I am mid range in the region I work in and intend to stay within this price range.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

My customers are issued with a Statement of Fees once booking is confirmed. I require a non-refundable booking fee on my acceptance of the Notice of Intended Marriage (this is what will give you a confirmed booking), with the balance paid in full at least 2 weeks prior to the wedding date. Payment can be by direct deposit or cash.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

My speciality is of course weddings, although it is also enormously rewarding to conduct Naming Ceremonies, Vow Renewals, and Funeral Services

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Accepted Answer

I am registered with the Attorney General's Department as an Authorised Celebrant.  My training course was completed through Australian Celebrations Training, and I have subsequently also completed a funeral celebrant's course through them, and yearly Ongoing Professional Development courses. I am also a Justice of the Peace (Qual) in Queensland.
