How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have always wanted to work with animals. While studying I worked for a pet minding franchise which I enjoyed but ultimately I wanted to start my own business. This allows me to run things how I want and to incorporate my skills where necessary. I feel great satisfaction knowing I can provide the types of services that are often neglected, such as extra cuddles, socialisation.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

One of my favourite customer stories is of Cookie, Gringo and Chi. 3 Chihuahuas from the same household. These 3 are not very good with strangers and bark a lot. They would not come near me at first and would constantly bark at me. With lots of extra visits and positive reinforcement they came to love me. They would come up to me and allow me to pat them.

What do you like most about your job?

The things I like most about my job is being outside and interacting with my clients dogs. I love being around and getting to know my clients animals who end up being like family.

A customer should ask what qualifications or experience you have with dealing with animals and I would recommend meeting the dog walker/pet minder to make sure they are the right fit before choosing.

I am honest and I always put the pets interest first.  I turn up on time for every meeting. I aim to give the best customer service and give the clients what they need.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

I am dedicated to caring for each animal as if they were my own. I provide extra care and work with animals that have behavioural issues if needed. I have undergone a dog training course and completed a Certificate IV in Animal Studies so I can better understand animal needs and care. I have completed an animal first aid course and I am fully insured. I am constantly wanting to upgrade my skills so am always completing courses/workshops/PD to ensure I can provide the upmost care for your animals.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Location, to see if I service your area. If not, I may still do the job depending on travel distance. Number of pets which are needed to be minded or the number of dogs to be walked in the same household.

I offer new clients a rewards card where they will receive their 10th walk free. Any referrals the client will receive their next service at a discounted price.

What makes your pricing competitive?

For pet minding I include other tasks such as poop-scooping the yard, watering the plants and general cleanliness which is included in the price. For dog walking I always make sure they have fresh water before I leave and give plenty of cuddles and love. while on the walk I provide basic training if needed and walk in the local area or drive to the park for your dog to have a good run.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Types of payment are cheque, cash and bank transfer. With Pet Minding I charge for 30 minute block visits and extra time can be added on to your visits at 15 minute blocks which will incur an extra charge. Dog Walking is charged for 30 or 45 minute walks.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have completed a Certificate IV in  Animal Companion Services at Box Hill and I have completed the Gentle Dog Trainers Association dog training course.  I have had previous experience in working as a pet minder for a franchise and have worked in a boarding kennel before. I have regularly volunteered for an animal shelter for a few years which has given me the experience to handle all types of animals.
