How did you decide to get into your line of work?

From a very young age I was artistic and always knew I'd end up in a creative role as a profession. Unlike Art which is quite personal, Graphic Design is a problem solving discipline. It's about providing a combination of visual and written solutions to a clients problem. It requires a think tank and not a few airy fairy sketches, there's depth to it. It's a challenge and that's one of the things I love about it. Finding the solution.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

There's a couple that spring to mind and the conclusion was the same with both. Clients wished they had discovered me to begin with and let me develop their brand from the start instead of cutting costs and paying for a cheap off the shelf job which didn't work. Branding is not a cost cutting area, you'll end up paying twice as much for someone to re work/rectify what should have been done properly in the first place. It's a no brainer.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy meeting new clients listening to what their requirements are.  I enjoy the diverse range of design projects I have the privilege of working on. And I thoroughly enjoy the look of satisfaction on a clients face when I have hit the nail on the head for them.  So in answer to the question I enjoy all of what I do from start to finish. If you don't you should be doing something else.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

It's not so much about what questions to ask, it's more a case of assessing the 'fit' between client and designer:  Can you communicate with them? Do you feel comfortable with them? Do you like their work?  Are they confident? Do they sound as though they know what they're talking about? Do they ask you a lot of questions about your business? Do they 'get' what it is you are trying to achieve? Make sure they provide you with a written quote, accept nothing that is verbal. If you get the feeling they are 'precious' and you'll be walking on egg shells I'd recommend you turn in the opposite direction. If you need branding for your business ask them if they have a detailed brief for you to fill in, if they don't, walk away.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

There's one question in particular that springs to mind but it's always when I have completed the job.  'Do you always hit the nail on the head this quickly?' And I reply, not every time but most of the time.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

Accepted Answer

I am extremely honest and I say what I think and remain true to my word. I'll always do the right thing by my client. I'll explain the pitfalls of some types of printing/colour and steer you in the right direction to ensure you get the best printed result. I am not interested in making a quick buck, I am interested in building an ongoing relationship with my clients.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

I am honest and reliable, I have integrity, I am deadline driven and I listen to the needs of clients. I'll deliver when I say I'll deliver at the price I have quoted. I care, it is very important to me that my client is happy with the end result. When they are, they'll come back, and they do, time and time again.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I require the client to give me as much information as possible and it's up to me to ask the right questions.  In order to be able to give an accurate quote you have to have all the answers and know what you are dealing with from the start.  No one likes surprises when it comes to money.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Accepted Answer

Time is money. Clients often find it difficult to communicate their needs and only know what they want when they see it.  Therefore my suggestions for a client to save money are: 1/ Make sure they have checked out the designers website and like the look and feel of their work before contacting them. Read the testimonials.  2/ Ensure they feel at ease with the designer before engaging their services and make sure the designer either asks you to fill in a detailed brief or asks you a lot of questions about the job, this will narrow the field of design concepts down in order to reach your design goal as quickly as possible. 3/ List websites of examples of work you have seen and liked, provide examples of work, brochure etc.... to show them.

What makes your pricing competitive?

I’m able to keep my overheads down.   This means my services are generally more affordable for small to medium sized businesses, especially those who are dipping their toe in the water for the first time.  We offer great design, genuine empathy and a professional, affordable service.”

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

Each job is assessed separately as no two jobs are ever the same, you can't compare oranges with apples.  Some jobs require the skill of my copywriter combined with graphics, where as other businesses already have their promotional literature drafted. Some businesses have professional photos at their disposal and others require photo and image searches.

Brand Development, Logos, Advertising, Promotional Material, Flyers, Brochures, Catalogues, Signage, Campaigns, Business Stationery, Presentation Folders,  Copywriting and Print Management are also available.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Accepted Answer

I have vast experience and have been in the design arena for over 28 years. I trained for 4 years in the UK and have had the privilege of working in many different locations London, Paris, Germany, Hong Kong and Korea.  I used to teach Adobe Design software, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator. As well as teaching Graphic Design, Typography and the Printing process.  I relate to people well.  I listen to what it is they need.  All of the above points combined help to make me the right person for the job.
