Q : How can you tell if its possums or rats that are making the noise in my roof?  Possums are nocturnal and are therefore active at night whereas rats can be active at any time of the day. We carry out an inspection into the roof cavity which determines if its possums,rats (or both) as it is very hard to tell by just the noises.    Q : Can possums or rats cause damage in the roof?  Both possums and rats can cause damage in the roof by eating through electrical wires. If they are nesting on the insulation in the roof, this can become damaged through constant urination and will require replacing.    Q : Is internal access needed for the treatment?  Not usually but this will depend on your property, our technician will be able to advise if internal access is required.    Q: How big a gap do possums & rats need to access a roof?  Possums can get through a hole smaller than a tennis ball whereas rats can get through much smaller gaps.    Q :Why can possums and rats be heard in the wall cavities?  Possums prefer sleeping in the wall cavities during the day as it is warmer and darker than a roof cavity. Rats can also be heard in wall cavities as they scurry between floors etc.    Q: How do possums & rats gain access onto the roof ?  Trees and vines that overhang a roof need to be cut back off the roof line by at least two meters. This will stop the possums and rats jumping the distance to the roof. Electricity and telephone cables that lead from the street to the house can also allow access onto the roof.    Q: If a rat or possum dies in the roof, how long will there be an odour for?  If a possum has died in the roof, the odour can be present for at least eight weeks whereas a rat odour can linger for up to four weeks.    Q : Do I need to get the subfloor area secured as well as the roof ?  Once the possums are evicted from the roof cavity they will try to find another way to access the roof. This may be possible via an open subfloor and wall cavities. Rats can also access the roof via this method as well. For a subfloor to be secured properly, a strong mesh needs to be put around the perimeter of the house and dug into the ground at least 50mm.    Q : Why doesn't the treatment work straight away?  Most possums will leave the same night of the initial treatment although they may not leave the roof every night as it can depend on the last time that they ate. Rats and mice donâ™t approach new things straight away. This is why after bait has been laid that it may not be touched for several days.    Q : Why can't possums be relocated?  Possums are protected under Federal Law and therefore cannot be relocated but can be removed from the property to the RSPCA.
