Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

I do have a personal indemnity insurance which is one of the prerequisites in maintaining a current Tax Agent Registration.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

It just seemed a natural career for me as I am a 'figures' person and like assisting people in understanding the tax system. Sometimes a client may just want to lodge a tax return but I provide an environment that allows the client to feel free to ask questions.

I have several clients who comment that they never enjoyed tax time but now actually look forward to making their appointments. One client said it would be good if it came round twice a year. Ha ha, we would all like two refunds a year :)

What do you like most about your job?

There are many things that I like about my job, clients often find tax daunting even stressful, so I find much pleasure when I succeed in alleviating anxiety.  My job is much more than lodging tax returns, I believe my growing client list is the result of building relationships of trust.

A prospective client should ensure the tax accountant is a registered tax agent. Other important aspects are the fee schedule, timeframe and what information will be required.

How much refund am I getting? Firstly I answer the FAQ with the 'figure' but then I endeavor to explain the client's position clearly. Quite often there are strategies available to improve the refund or ways to reduce the tax payable if that is the outcome.

My office is very private, the client's finances and taxes are a personal matter and I commit to maintaining the client's personal information secure and private at all times.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Information required to give an accurate quote would be the type of return required; for example an individual, complex deductions, investments, rental property, share portfolio and managed funds. Business returns, bookkeeping required, estimating income helps to gauge size of business.

The client can save money and time by being organised. Using a bank card for all tax expenses instead of cash ensures claims can be verified. Keeping all tax information in a file or envelope and marking with relevant year.

I offer the same fees to new and return clients. I have not increased my fees for several years and I do not recoup the fee charged by One Flare to the client.

I operate from a home office therefore my overheads are low compared to my competitors. Having affordable fees is a bonus for my clients as the service and professionalism received is of a very high standard.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I have a base rate for tax returns with additional charges for complex returns. If work is time consuming, then I charge an hourly rate. For instance I generally charge a base rate for lodging a BAS with an hourly rate for additional bookkeeping.

Having a Masters in Taxation, I have a broad knowledge of all aspects relating to tax, however I do possess an additional interest in superannuation. I like to ensure my clients have a good understanding of superannuation and the tax advantages available.
