How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I began studying to be a Massage Therapist many years ago and during this time I was inspired by one of my teachers to pursue a career in Chinese Medicine. This particular teacher had a fantastic knack for explaining some of the abstract concepts of Chinese Philosophy in a way which really highlighted the capacity for use of Acupuncture in modern society.

What do you like most about your job?

I most appreciate being able to have a positive and lasting impact on peoples health. There are many signs and symptoms which we experience on a day to day basis and just put up with. In Chinese Medicine, these signs and symptoms are key diagnostic tools and belong to specific patterns of disease within the body. The best part about Chinese Medicine is that it can treat a patients main complaint (e.g. neck pain) but also address underlying conditions and concomitant symptoms (perhaps a head cold, fatigue, restless sleep or stomach upset) all at the same time. In this sense, acupuncture treatments are great value for money but also a better service than some as it takes into account many aspects of a patients life. The other great thing about this work is that I get to meet an incredibly wide variety of people whom I may otherwise never have had the opportunity to meet. It encourages me to keep an open mind and to be in a constant state of learning and awe of what the human body is capable of.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

I'm often asked if acupuncture hurts and the answer is no! Some people describe the sensation of the needles as a dull ache, tingly, spreading or tight sensation. The needles we use are extremely fine and are designed to separate the skin rather than pierce it. If you're nervous about the treatment I will explain the process as it happens and give you some breathing/visualisation techniques to help you through it. Often the anticipation of what's to come is worse than the sensation itself and after one or two you're likely to relax. In fact one of the key benefits of acupuncture is to relax your nervous system!

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Accepted Answer

1) Don't self diagnose. Doctor Google would have everyone believe that they are doomed to a life riddled with disease and misery.  2) If possible, keep a written record over a week or so leading up to your appointment of your symptoms and how they according to factors such as: weather/temperature, stress levels, menstrual cycles, diet, exercise/stretches. Human beings are notoriously forgetful and we're all guilty of attributing symptoms to factors which, when compared to actual events, are less than accurate.   3) Be kind to yourself - basic health care is not rocket science. Eat a healthy diet (as best you know how), drink plenty of water, don't deprive yourself of sleep (for anything), talk kindly and positively to yourself, do some gentle exercise and don't sweat the small stuff.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

Acupuncture is part of an integrative health care treatment called Chinese Medicine. Practitioners are trained to use acupuncture to treat every system in the body. "Specialising" is not usually a term that acupuncture practitioners use however there are certain conditions/presentations which appear in the clinic frequently and these are treatments with which we have a lot of experience. Pain management is probably the symptom which most people are familiar with in regards to what Acupuncture can treat. Fertility is another area which Acupuncture treats very effectively as it addresses gynaecological issues affecting fertility (endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, irregular cycles etc) as well as the emotional issues attached to the fertility/pregnancy/parenthood process. Other commonly treated conditions include insomnia, digestive disorders, and headaches/migraines.
