RE: All Area Bathroom       Michael Kelly   Michael Kelly undertook all aspects of our bathroom renovation at our property in Evandale. We contacted Michael through his advertisment inThe Messenger. When we purchased appropriate tiles and fixtures for the bathroom Michael was also highly recommended by the staff atInternational Ceramics. Michael responded to our initial call promptly, arranged a convenient time to view the potential job and provided a quote within 2-3 days. The quote was very detailed. Each aspect was itemised. Therefore, we had a clear idea of what the work involved from the outset and what we had to supply. The quote was competitive. This efficiency and accuracy characterised all aspects of the renovation from the demolition of the existing 1950's bathroom through to the installation of the bath, toilet, windows, vanity, new shower screen and the supervision of all the plumbing work. The tiling, including a detailed mosaic feature on the bath, is excellent. My husband and I work full-time. We provided Michael with a house key for the duration of the project and we trusted him to complete the work even though we were not at the house. I have no reservations in recommending Michael Kelly. Providing people with beautiful Bathrooms that they can enjoy without the major price tags other companies seem to think is 'Fair'. I often feel my work is like a piece of Art. Every bathroom we create is different and unique and is finished to a high standard.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

What should I do first? Once you have decided to start a project at home think a bit more specifically about the finer details about exactly what you want. We can offer advice, but a lot of decisions will come down to your personal preferences. Next contact us, and we will give you a written quote explaining what will need to be done, amounts of tiles required and products needed. Is everything included within the price? Generally, our price includes all the labour costs and materials required to complete the job. For example glues, grouts, concrete, etc. It is your task to provide tiles and bathroom products such as baths, vanities, toilets, etc. We can organise these items, but find that customers have certain preferences in the design/style of these products and can then know exactly how much they are paying for them. What do we do if we only have one bathroom? In these instances we can provide a modern portable ensuite that includes a shower, toilet and vanity. However, this will depend on you having a suitable position and access to a gulley for waste. When quoating your job we can see if this could be a option for you. How can I pick a good tile? As the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for". Unfortunately there is a lot of cheap, poorly made tiles with little quality control coming from the Asian countries. Not to say that all are bad. Beware of very cheap tiles because ultimately you will be disappointed with the end result. We have been encountering tiles that are bowed, with colour, size, thickness variations and chipped edges. Italy and Spain are well known for good quality tiles but you will pay more for them. Tiles should be the same size, batch and colour. Check on ceramic tiles, that the glaze covers edges and lighter tiles should have lighter biscuit shades. How do I keep my new tiles clean? Tiles are a great product,, however they won’t stay clean by themselves. Always keep your tiles clean - trapped dirt can be very abrasive and this sand and gritty dirt is likely to damage any tiled surface. Cleaning should always begin with the gentlest means possible, which may include sweeping or damp mopping or vacuuming to reduce grit. Do not use abrasive cleaners including powdered cleansers and even "mildly" abrasive creams. How can I have my wall/floor tile laid? Straight, on the diamond, checkerboard, brick pattern, with a border, insert or other feature. Can I lay on my timber floors? Yes, but they need to be dry, sound and not falling apart. Our preference is to attach CTU (ceramic tile underlay) a cement sheet by mechanical means and then use the appropriate glue. Some adhesive companies claim to have glues to directly stick to wood but we use the above method as a tried and proven way of getting a good result. Do my tiles need to be sealed? Possibly, depending on the product. Typically, natural products need to be protected with a sealer. Most ceramics do not. The best people to ask would be the tile shop you buy from. Sealing can be a hidden cost. Higher quality Italian tiles can come sealed whereas cheaper ones aren’t. What is the hardness rating? The hardness rating system ranks tiles from 1-5 and determines the suitability of the tile for certain areas. The rating 1 is only suitable for the bathroom. No shoes can be worn on this surface. 3 is considered the minimum standard for other areas of Australian homes. Ratings of 4 and 5 are for high traffic and commercial applications.

All Area Bathrooms is different to it's competitor. Our advantage over other expensive and limited choice bathroom companies is that we do not have their high overheads. We have no showroom, we do not pay commissions to sales reps and we do not push you to buy your tiles or any of the additional accessories from us. It is your choice where you buy your tiles and accessories. You then know the quality and price of the products required to make your bathroom beautiful and adjust it to suit your budget.  We are also able to have your renovation completed in just over a week with quality tradesmen who have worked for some of the large and well known building companies such as Medallion Homes.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Many people would like a quote over the phone without people looking at the bathroom. This simply isn't possible. We need to look at the size, the existing floor plan, current state of the bathroom, the structure of the house and then of course talk to you about the design you have in mind.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Make sure you get three quotes before starting. Always ask how long they expect to take. (Even a large bathroom renovation should take no longer than two weeks at the most.) Check that they have the correct licences. There are many companies out there without licences for the construction they are taking place in.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Michael and Jason Kelly are the primary contractors handling day to day activities and all tiling components of renovations. With experienced and trusted trades people within our building group brought in for specific tasks.     Together, Jason and myself (Michael Kelly) have 21 years experience creating bathrooms for companies such as Medallion Homes, Rossdale Homes, Beaumont Bathrooms, Harvey Norman Renovations, SA Building and Molnar Constructions.      Both Jason and I, take pride in keeping up with relevant and new developments within our field. Being up to date with new products and Housing Code Standards is important to us. We have both completed the ‘Building Works Supervisor Course’ through the Housing Industry Association (HIA).  We hold a valid Builder’s Licence for Bathroom Renovations and Supervising within South Australia (BLD179503).      ‘All Area Bathrooms’ has been created after working for high end building companies that seemed to be excessive in price and length of construction time, and especially low on customer satisfaction and choice.     We think that within wet area construction tiling is the key component that makes the process successful or disappointing with other trades being complementary. We often come across many good renovations that are overshadowed by bad tiling. So having two builders with backgrounds in tiling, experienced in all materials and high quality workmanship is our biggest asset.
