How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Accepted Answer

I have enjoyed gardening since I was a child, and gardened extensively for many years at home.  I found that friends and family were always asking me questions about gardening, so after working in an office I took the step of studying horticulture and starting up a gardening business.  It has been a decision that I have never regretted.

What do you like most about your job?

Working outside and enjoying fresh air and good exercise.  I get immense job satisfaction from transforming a garden and seeing the look of delight on my customers' faces.

Beyond knowing that the service professional is qualified, insured and registered, customers should ask a gardening professional what could be done to improve the appearance and function of the garden above and beyond the initial maintenance request.

I am qualified, insured and operate a registered business.  I am very customer focused and service orientated.  I have had many poor experiences personally with trades people not turning up on time or not turning up at all, and appreciate the frustration this causes.  I am always punctual and reliable, and if difficulties arise, I communicate with my customers.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

I was a passionate home gardener for many years before deciding to pursue a qualification in horticulture which I completed in 2011.  Since then I have operated a gardening service and pride myself on treating my customers' gardens as I would treat my own.  I take a holistic approach to garden care and believe I add value to the gardens I maintain by noticing problems that others may miss, and by being able to suggest plants that will perform better in gardens where plants die or fail to thrive.  I am currently working towards the completion of a qualification in Applied Landscape Design.  I am also well organised and I turn up for jobs on time.  I communicate clearly with my customers and they appreciate my reliable and friendly service.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

I need to know the overall size of the yard and the tasks to be undertaken.  A description of these tasks is helpful, for example, hedge pruning - knowing the type of hedge, the height and the length of the hedge is very helpful.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Accepted Answer

1.If you have a lot of waste to come out of the garden, hiring a skip can be cheaper than paying for green waste transport and disposal at the local council.  This gives you an opportunity to offload other household rubbish too.  2. Pulling, brush cutting or poisoning weeds in advance.  3. Mowing or brush cutting a long lawn a week in advance before a professional mow, ensuring that you take no more than 1/3 off the height of the lawn.

What makes your pricing competitive?

My pricing is competitive because I take the time to assess the maintenance requirements of a properly carefully before undertaking any work.  The size of the garden and a few words about the tasks required does not really give an accurate idea of the work involved, and this could lead to an over inflation of the quote, rather than a competitive quote.

How do you normally charge for your service?

I charge on an hourly basis, but I prefer to come and view a garden before providing a firm quote to be able to assess the maintenance requirements properly.  I believe that my customers will receive a fairer price if I undertake this process before commencing any work.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I specialise in garden design and choosing the right plants that will suit the purpose of the garden and that will thrive in the environment in which they are to be planted.  I am also very good at pest and disease and nutrient deficiencies identification and treatment.  I am able to diagnose and rectify problems that others find difficult.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I was a keen home gardener for many years before deciding to study horticulture and start a gardening service.  I am skilled in many aspects of garden care and undertake horticultural consultation and garden design work in addition to garden maintenance.  A fair portion of my work is preparing gardens for the sale or rental of a property.
