How did you decide to get into your line of work?

As I'm a second generation Painter and Decorator it was to some degree my destiny to one day become manager of our family business. I did try other jobs in my younger years however being self employed in a service industry offers greater job satisfaction and flexibility.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Are you BSA Licensed and do you have current Public Liability Insurance  How long have you been providing your painting services.      Are your staff employed qualified painters and apprentices or brush hands.  Do you use ABN subcontractors to provide the labour?  If yes, this means they will more then likely pass liability for any problems on to there subcontractor or they are avoiding paying ABN staff there correct wage entitlements such as superannuation, work cover etc..  Do you have any client testimonials that I can read or previous jobs that can be appraised   These are the most important questions as there are many unqualified and unscrupulous service providers in our industry.   Obtaining some form of Verbal or written Guarantee is also good, however most painting work only fails due to substrate related moisture problems or poor surface preparation which is usually related to the amount quoted to complete the works.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

How much will the work cost?  As painting to a professional standard is time consuming and often labour intensive, the amount required to paint different jobs is always based upon our estimated labour and materials required to complete the work combined with each jobs specific circumstances.  We have m2 rates that can often be applied, however with smaller jobs or work that requires extensive preparation the m2 rates are unable to be applied in these circumstances.   The short answer is every painting job has different contributing circumstances that will affect the cost of painting the project.  The correct attention to surface preparation, combined with using premium materials and qualified professionals, is normally the difference between a quality painting job that lasts 10 years or more vs a Crazy Clarks style cheap paint job that blisters and peels away in only a few months/years

How do you normally charge for your service?

With repaint works onsite visual inspections are required to determine the actual scope of works, so that we can provide a written fixed amount quotation.  Every quote is different as its based on each jobs varied contributing factors, We often break the quote down into detail so that the client has all the information available when making there decision.  Some times with small fiddly type jobs the painting work is completed on an hourly rate plus materials and other associated costs.  This is done because some tasks are very difficult to quantify the labour requirements accurately, in these cases a provisional costing estimate is provided for the requested works and then when the work is completed the labour and material costs are calculated to establish the invoice amount for the completed works
