How much does a brick garage cost?

$15,000 to $30,000

How much does a brick garage cost?

The price of a brick garage will vary depending on the size of the garage and the building materials used. Expect to pay between $15,000 and $100,000 for your project, which includes the price of materials and labour. A luxury-style garage will generally cost on the high end of that price range, and a single, basic garage will cost about $20,000 to $30,000 on average. Below is the typical cost for labourers to lay bricks in different Australian states.

State Average bricklaying cost per hour
    NSW $60
    QLD $55
    WA $50
    SA $45

    Benefits of a brick garage

    Adds value to your property
Building a brick garage adds value to your home because of the possibilities it presents to potential buyers. For instance, some people use a garage for extra storage space while others create a home gym or laundry room.

    Protect Your vehicles
Parking in a garage can protect your vehicles from extreme weather, such as heavy wind, rain and hail.

    Extra storage space
Some garage owners use the extra space to store furniture or household items. Lawn equipment could also be stowed in a garage, and this is especially convenient for people who don’t have a tool shed.

Factors impacting the cost of building a brick garage

    Concrete slab
The price of a concrete slab will vary by size. In general, expect to pay between $50 and $110 per square metre. Keep in mind that a single size garage in Australia will measure at least 3 metres x 4.5 metres. A double garage will measure 5.4 x 5.4 metres at a minimum. In many cases, you might be charged extra for a thicker slab. In general, expect to pay between $1200 and $5300 to a concreter to pour the slab, though this price will be higher if you’re building a large garage.

    Brick structure
For the brickwork cost and labour, you will pay between $2,300 and $3,200 for a small to medium-sized garage. If you’re building an attached garage, you can probably expect to pay less for the price to lay brick. This is because you’ll need fewer bricks to connect the garage structure to your home. A free-standing garage will most often require more bricks because the structure must be bricked on all sides. The brick cost per m2 varies, though many builders charge by the brick. Expect to pay about $1,500 to have 1,000 bricks laid.

    The garage door
On average, it costs $600 to $5000 to install a garage door. However, this price depends on the type of door installed as well as the size. For instance, a single roller door is generally cheaper and may fall in the $600 to $2,000 price range, and it is less expensive than a sectional door. The double garage cost for installing doors is about $2,000 to $5,000.

    The roof
The cost to build a garage roof varies based on the size of the structure and the roofing materials. Metal, terracotta, Colorbond and concrete tiles are popular roofing materials. It generally costs more to lay tiles than it does to install Colorbond. Expect to pay $4,000 to $7,000 for either a tile roof or a metal roof on a small to medium-sized garage. Double garage prices may be several thousand dollars more.

    Rendering
Rendering a brick garage involves painting the brick to customize it or match it to your home’s paint colours. However, rendering will cost extra in addition to the price of bricklaying. Expect to pay between $30 to $50 per square metre. Most rendering jobs cost between $750 to $2,500, though this amount will be higher if your project is a large one.

    The size
A garage with a brick veneer will cost about $1200 to $1600 per square metre. However, if you install full brick, then you should expect to pay a bit more. Full brick averages about $1300 to $1700 per square metre. However, if you’d like an extra-large garage, you should expect to pay more. This is especially true if you’re building a garage to be used for multiple purposes like a car workshop or a home gym.

Price estimates for different sized brick garages

    Single car garage
On average, a single garage costs between $15,000 and $18,000. You may have to pay up to $20,000 if you plan to have electricity and any similar amenities installed.

    Double car garage
A double garage will generally be twice the amount of a single-car garage. The brick double garage cost may vary, but expect to pay $40,000 including the cost of electricity.

    Three or more car garage
An extra-large garage can cost up to $100,000, with electricity and amenities, though the price varies based on the size. You must also have plenty of room on your property to pour the slab.

    How to hire a builder

How to create an accurate estimate

    • Decide what size you’d like your new garage to be.
    • Decide if you want any amenities, such as windows, rendered bricks or custom doors.
    • Get an estimate from each potential builder.

    Licencing and qualifications

    • A new garage is a structural addition to your property, which means you should hire a licensed builder. There are several classes of licences that builders can obtain. The requirements for licensure vary by state or territory and also by licence class.

    Victoria

    • Three years of work experience in the category to which you’re applying
    • A completed application that provides proof of experience
    • Pass a written test

    New South Wales

    • Two years of relevant work experience
    • A certificate, diploma or degree relevant to the type of work to be performed (e.g. bricklaying, construction, etc.)

    • Proof of insurance

    Queensland

How to save money hiring a builder

    • Choose someone with insurance (This could save money in the long-run if there’s property damage or an injury)
    • Compare prices by requesting quotes from multiple builders
    • Ask about licensure or appropriate credentials (An adequately trained person is likely to do the job right the first time, which means you won’t likely need to hire a second party)
