  In the painting industry, quality should be the focus. If a painter is more concerned with winning a job rather than giving advice they should generally be avoided. If there is a structural defect that you may be concerned about for example spider cracks in render; ask what is causing it, what product they will be using by name and ask them to explain why. If they can't explain what is causing it, they probably won't know how to fix it and the problem will reoccur. Also a painter who is willing to give advice after hours values their profession and is more about you receiving a quality job and value for money. Ask if a painter can perform other trades for example plastering as this can save you calling a separate trade and can mean less sanding and prep for a painter. If you are unsure of colours, ask for samples. This can avoid you being unhappy with a colour down the track and repainting. Also try and get a feel for a painters personality as this can mean the difference between you being able to be honest and receiving the job you want and being unhappy with a job.
