Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Yes indeed we have a current Public Liability Insurance policy. We offer a 6 month guarantee on all of our work along with comply with Queensland Building and Construction (QBCC) consumer requirements by taking out home warranty insurance policies for consumer customers.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

Our family has had a dream of one day owning our own business. Both business partners have come from the Corporate world and are both highly trained in Business Management. Shane's father was a licenced Electrician many years ago and he was a great handyman and tought Shane everything he knows. After having enough of the corporate world, both Shane and Karen went into business together and have never looked back.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

We changed a front door over only a few weeks ago for a customer. The original front door was a plain door which no longer matched the character of the house. We suggested a new front door option to the customer which we thought matched the new character of the house. Once the door was installed, new timbers surrounding it, followed by staining, the customer was absolutely thrilled with the outcome.

We love project type jobs and love getting out there and helping people complete jobs that have been outstanding for a long time. We really love getting out there and helping the community.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

The customer should ask to see trade licence and qualifications to ensure the tradesman is licenced to take on the work they say they can do. Customers always have a budget in mind and they should ask questions if they want to bring the price down. It could be a small cheaper material change that is needed which can make a difference.

We like to understand the customers needs, their budget and what material finish they would like whether it is on the cheaper side, middle range or of top quality. All of these demonstrate we are all about the customer and want to help them in any way we can.

We need to understand the customer requirements, the finish they are wanting to achieve, the time it will take us to complete the job along with the material costs.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Customers can save money the following ways: 1. Customers can purchase the materials prior. For example if a wall fixed bookshelf is to be installed, a timesaver would be to have the bookshelf there, ready to go so it can be installed on the wall. 2. If a deck were to be rejuvinated , the customer could clean the deck down prior and we can then come in and paint it for them, saving on time taken for labour 3. For larger jobs such as deck building, customers often like to assist with it to save on labour costs.

What makes your pricing competitive?

With larger jobs such as carpentry related ones, there can be so many variables when it comes to the timber/materials used which varies dependent on the finish the customer is trying to achieve. We will work with our customers within their budgets and come up with a solution that works for both of us.

Some trades provide hourly rates however we would prefer to provide a fixed price for our jobs to give the customer complete confidence that we will remain within budget rather than there being discrepancies at the end of the job over hours spent on labour.

For the carpentry side, Deck Building, outdoor stair replacement, privacy screen building, internal and external door replacement to name a few.  For the handyman side, name it and we can do it.

Shane our lead Contractor has 6 years experience in Home Maintenance services. Prior to starting his own business, Shane has completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Marketing and Accounting), a Masters degree in Business Management and has completed alot of training in Work Health and Safety. Since starting his business he has become a qualified Carpenter - QBCC Licence 1277259. Shane is very well educated and knows how to apply all of this knowledge to the DHC business.
