Just the one about the staircase that I had to build a new house for it to go in and the lady who if and when she believed that I was doing a proper job would give out un asked for hugs and kisses, but only on  my cheek of course. Nice lady, husband didn't seem to mind, and they paid me.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Many years of practical experience. Have never had to re do a job and many of my customers have become my friends. Built a large curved staircase approx. 38 years ago, and the owners son was just a baby. Came to see me after all those years to tell me that he had sold his land to developers, his son was now married, and could I come and take the staircase out of the house and store it and then design and build a new house for his son and put the stairs in. Did so. The job took a long time and the stairs are just as nice as they were when they were new

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Exactly what do they want. Don't believe what you see on the telly. Rome wasn't built in a day, even though on the telly it all looks so easy, and just because your friend tells you that Jack so and so had the same job done at half the price and twice as quick, I always tell the client how long it will take and what is involved.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Give quotations containing materials and labour, for difficult jobs, full design and report, then based on materials at my cost plus 2% and labour which is normally $ 44.00 per hour but that depends on many issues as in wether the job entails asbestos removal or electrical replacing or re route of plumbing

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

Began as an apprentice and went on from there. With my staircases, especially the curved work this hasn't been taught at TAFE since the 1930's and I have spent many years investigating the work and have developed my work from that and have been asked to demonstrate this type of work to TAFE students and other tradesmen and have had many of my jobs featured in the Newcastle Morning Herald newspaper
