How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I chose being a handyman because I like helping people and love the variety of work that I do. I get a great deal of satisfaction seeing a timber deck come to life or building a fence or painting a room or re decorating a bathroom and know that what I have done has added value to someones home and that they will benefit from the work that I have done.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I had a client once who had tried selling their house for over 3 years listing it with various agents and getting absolutely no offers even after reducing the price of their home by tens of thousands of dollars. They approached me for my advise and I told them that there are only 2 types of buyers wanting to buy a house regardless of the area or current market climate. Those that want a bargain and want to buy a house for the cheapest possible price so that they can spend a little money on it and benefit buy the capital gain it creates and those that appreciate a well presented home that needs no work as it has all been done and are prepared to pay the extra to get it. I asked them which buyer they wanted? They replied the one that paid more money. So we worked out a budget on what they could afford to spend to bring the house up to that sort of standard and I advised them where best to spend that money and we did. Too many people spend money on the wrong things in their home and instead of increasing the value of the home by 3-4 or more times the value of what they spend they waste their money and add little or no value to their home. Once we finished the work (2 weeks) they re-invited real estate agents to view the home again at a newly listed price that I thought reflected the true value after the renovation work. It was also much higher than the first price they originally listed their home at 3 years earlier. The clients were hesitant at first and I asked that they trust me on the price as they had trusted me on their renovation. The very next day they got an offer on the house. My client rang me thrilled that after all this time that had an offer and so soon. I suggested that they sleep on the offer over night before accepting. The next day they got a second offer slightly higher than the first and again my advise was sleep on it as they offers were similar in price but structured differently. The third day bought a third offer. My advise now was tell the other offers they are too low and if they want the house to up the price. 3 days later they had settled on an unconditional offer higher then the listing price and with a one month settlement date. The few thousand dollars that we spent on the renovation turned into over $70,000 added to the sale price, far more than they would have accepted before they contacted me to get the house sold and far more than real estate agents were suggesting they sell it at.

What do you like most about your job?

I like meet new people and new challenges. I like that no two days or jobs are the same. I like to be creative in solving difficult problems and love to see the look on a clients face when I finish a job knowing that they are happy with the result

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Accepted Answer

Have they done this sort of work before? What sort of experience they have in this sort of work? Not all handymen can do a wide variety of jobs, I know because I often have to fix work after someone else attempted it and the client paid good money for bad work.  The client should also be satisfied that the tradesman lives in the area and is not likely to disappear on them once the cheque has cleared and can't get them back if there is a problem. If they have lived on the Gold Coast for many years they are more likely to want to protect their reputation and come back if there is a problem.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Question: Can you do the work for cheap?  Answer: Yes but do you want it done properly? I only spend as much money on fixing the job as I have to so that you are happy, any less and you will never be happy with the result and never use me again. Quote " He who pays too much is a fool. He who does not pay enough is an even bigger fool."

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

What materials do they want me to use? Are there any time restraints of the job? What is access like to the area? eg: locked gates, is someone home during the day to let me in etc. Is there anything that will prevent me from completing the job once I start such as waiting for materials or another trade to do a job before I can continue etc.

3 tips on saving money before I start the work: 1) If you don't know what you are doing don't attempt it yourself your will only waste time and products and create more work for me to fix :) 2) Get it fixed straight away before it gets worse and costs more to fix. 3) Don't listen to your brother in law unless he is a tradesman in the trade the job needs fixing in.

What makes your pricing competitive?

I don't have high over heads and drive a modest work vehicle therefore I don't have to charge a fortune to cover my business expenses.

Depending on the job services can be charged on an hourly basis or a fixed price.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I like to create so particularly enjoy building timber decks, fencing and doing bathroom renovations. I have quite a creative flair and think outside the box. My work always adds financial value to a clients home.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I come from a carpentry back ground where I was taught the old fashioned way where as a builder you learned every aspect of building a home so that you were capable of turning your hand to anything. I owned my own housing business in New Zealand prior to immigrating to Australia over 20 years. I have been fortunate to be Voted the Gold Coasts Best Handyman for 2011, 2012 and 2013 by you the public as well as my peers in the building industry.
