Frequently Asked Questions
Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?
I am thorough and like to ensure that the customer is happy before I consider a job complete. I have never lost a customer due to poor work. I am an open and friendly communicator, and like clients to feel that they can ask about anything if it helps put their mind at ease.
Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?
I'm quite good at garden clean ups. Most people are pleasantly surprised at the improvement I can achieve in a garden's appearance in a relatively short time. I'm quite good at regular maintenance too, from lawn mowing, to pruning, hedging, weeding, weed spraying, tree removal, et.....
How do you normally charge for your service?
Mostly by the hour - the rates depend on what I'm doing and what machinery is involved
Lawns - typically a fixed rate for each individual lawn as there are several variables to take into account
What makes your pricing competitive?
I doubt that I'm the cheapest out there, but I'm definitely not the most expensive. What makes me competitive is the amount of work I'm able to get done in a time that is usually less than most other contractors out there. I have a strong work ethic, and have never been the type to slack off.
How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips
Make sure you have a green waste bin supplied by your local council - it saves me charging you to take smaller amounts of green waste away.
Try to include as many works as possible in the one job, as the costs of many visits will amount to more overall.
Ask your gardener about some aspects of gardening that you're interested in doing. They can give you a few tips, and you can save a little by doing some of it yourself!
Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?
Yes, I'm an insured business.
I do guarantee my work to a certain level. When dealing with plants there is certain amount of nature that comes into play that no-one can guarantee. However, as far as completing tasks correctly, yes I happily guarantee my work.
What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?
I don't like cutting corners. I'm all for getting a job done in an efficient manner, but not in a way that compromises the end result. I don't like shoddy work, and see fixing up substandard work that others have previously completed as an opportunity.
What do you like most about your job?
Being outdoors. Seeing gardens flourish. Happy customers. No two days are the same. Finding solutions to problems where clients have previously been frustrated.
How did you decide to get into your line of work?
I like being my own boss. I like the physical nature of the work, and the benefits to my health. I like the variety as no two gardens are the same. It's a good feeling to do work that people really appreciate. I love the outdoors too!
What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?
I've been working in gardens since my primary school years, and that has continued on into my adult years. I've worked with other gardeners for the past 10-15 years, as well as having done landscaping and handyman work. I have never lost a client, and those I continue to serve are very happy with my work. I've recently completed a Certificate IV in Building & Construction, and plan to have my builders registration soon.
What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?
There are many factors that go into a fixed price quote. For example with a lawn you need to know:
- the size
- what access to the lawn is like (can it be accessed with a larger ride on mower)
- are the clippings being mulched back into the lawn or caught
- are the grass clippings going into the client's green bin or being taken away
- is there a lot of edging to trim
- is the lawn overgrown or in good condition
All these factors contribute to the price I would charge. I can usually give an estimate of pricing based on a description of a lawn, but ultimately really need to see the lawn to give an exact quote.
What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?
Apart from questions about how much I charge, most clients' questions relate to the kinds of plants that would do best in particular locations. The answers are many and varied as there are so many different plants, and so many different planting conditions. One piece of advice is to have a stroll around a plant nursery and have a look at the kinds of plants you like. This will give me a better idea of the type of garden you are after, and make it a lot easier to come up with a planting solution.
Are there any special offers you would like to offer to Oneflare customers?
I am happy to offer 5-10 minutes of free weed spraying for the first 2 visits to a client's property. Usually this would cost $16.50 per visit. It helps tidy up some of the annoying places that weeds manage to grow out of like cracks in the path, and behind hot water services.
What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?
Because gardening is an unregulated industry it's sometimes difficult to figure out who might be the best gardener for you. I would figure out who to use based on a combination of experience, comparison, and references.
Asking a Gardener a bit about their history and the kind of work they've done will give you some idea of whether they are appropriate for the work you need completed.
Compare 2 or 3 gardeners to see what they have to offer. You can learn a lot in the process, and get some differing opinions about the best ways to address your gardening needs.
References are a great insight into someone's work history. They're the next best thing to word of mouth, and can provide good insight into the person delivering the product/service.
Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?
None in particular. I'm most fond of doing the garden clean ups where a client comes home to see the difference that my work has made. Sometimes it's like they forgot they had the space and the clean up is like an unveiling of land they never knew they had. It's a very satisfying experience when you've got happy customers!
