My business is fully insured and yes all of my work is guaranteed, if somebody does have a problem then I would like to know so we can work out a solution together and correct anything that may need extra attention.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I worked as a mechanic and at a golf coarse for 17 years doing all the coarse machinery and club house maintenance people kept asking me to do things for them and before I knew it I had too much work to stay in the full time job so I took the plunge and went solo and have never looked back since, I love what I do

The best thing about being a handyman is the varying types of work, nearly every day brings something different to look forward too and this helps build years experiance.

Basically anything that they feel needs to be asked as the customer needs to feel comfortable with who ever they are hiring, But company insurance, job price, time frame, types of materials that will be used etc etc are all good ones to ask,

Apart from the obvious like price most people ask how long the job will take or when can I start, the length or timeframe for the job will normally be answered at the time of quoting and my start dates range between 1 and 4 weeks from the time of meeting, this is usually determined by the size of the job and how much time I need to allocate to do it. Small jobs can somtimes be done there and then

The person that you speak to is the person that will be doing the job, If I give you a time then I like to be punctual and on time, I have all the current police and working with children checks as well

The person you speak to (Me) is the person who does the job so I am accountable and take pride in all of my work, My rates are competitive and in most cases I will attempt to beat other genuine written quotes, I am also a local to the area that I work in

The more relevant information that the customer can proved the better and easier it is to provide an accurate quote, There is no such thing as too much info here. one of the most important would be the size or approximate area of the job, and the type of materials to be used or preferred

The customer can save money be keeping the work site clear of obstacles that make it harder to access or move around in the work area, If you have to negotiate around things or move things to get the job done this will often slow the project down and take extra time

Not really as I feel my prices are already good, generally I will always look after pensioners and locals to my immediate area, most of my customers get little extra's bits done here and there that do not always get charged, its the little 1 percenters that often keep people coming back

I am competitive in my pricing and if the customer shows me another written genuine quote I will always attempt to beat it with out sacrificing the quality of my work. If I can't beat it, the reason may be that the materials or methods used may be of better quality as I will always try and source the best available

How do you normally charge for your service?

Accepted Answer

I can charge per hour or per job, however I find quoting per job normally works best for the customer as different people work at different speeds so an hourly rate often doesn't work when comparing quotes from different people, If I give a customer a price I stick to it or better it but unless advised prior I never go over or add more than the quoted price unless the customer requests additional work, so there are no nasty surprises when the bill is handed over.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

I consider all aspects of my trade to be specialist work, from grinding tree stumps and mini digger work to building fences, decks, paving and gardening etc, I am also a qualified apiarist beekeeper to boot so I can remove troublesome bee's a get rid of those annoying wasp nests

I have more than 20 years experience in my chosen fields and I am qualified in many different area's, Like automotive mechanics and Greenkeeping etc, I also hold many other skills like carpentry, and engineering and have all the equipment to perform pretty much any task
